Buffalo Arms web site

A friend steered me to this site - WOW!
I've ordered a couple boxes of 16 bore brass - only $21.00 per box of 25 - couldn't believe it - along with some other stuff . I can see this site is going to keep me quite broke - about where I already am so I'm used to it.

Now I need to get that Husky 17B or 17A operational. The right tube, with the rifled larger barrel is .670" on the bore and .703" groove diameter. The note on the Husky Museum site said RB and black powder was the normal load for the straight and twist rifled 20, 24 and 28 bores. There is no mention of a 13 bore right barrel, but they do mention brass cases were used for the rifled tube. This would keep it simple to separate ammo, paper or plastic(modern) for the left full choked tube and brass for the rifled one. I already have a .684" mould that engraves 1/2 depth of the lands so I'll be trying them first. I may have to order a new RB mould from Jeff Tanner to cast closer to groove diameter ball - maybe not. I've sure the straight rifling is only ment to prevent spinning inside the barrel and this will be ackomplished with the lighter .684" balls that only engrave part way. Too, the smaller, lighter ball will admit to a higher velocity. 466gr. in WW and 482gr. in pure lead should be OK, power wise . Gonna be fun!

Daryl:
I have been buying from Buffalo Arms for years. Great place for brass and bullets for the oldy goldy guns. I use their 12.7X44R (My SXS Husky combo), .43 Spanish and .43 Mauser, 6.5X53R brass. I also have purchased different jacketed and cast bullets. I have not yet been disappointed. OH!, also dies.
The other one is Rocky Mountain Arms for turned specialty cases. It took them a while, but I now have 40 perfect (headstamped also!) pieces of brass for my 9,5 x56R for my Fr. Newmeyer SXS combo.
Now that all 11 of my inlaws are gone back to SA, I intend to start working with my guns again.
Hope of hopes!!

I discovered them when I was going through my BPCR phase. I got tired of the mess of BP and have since gravitated to 777 and paper patched bullets. They are good for that too.

dont forget your 16 bore straigth rifling double. what with case lenght? 50 or 65mm? would like to see a chamber cast of this gun, parafin will be fine. will measure a 16 bore magtech but a .703 roundball seems to big as it can be for this cartridge.

AND WE NEED PICS FROM THIS GUN; PLEASE REMEMBER THIS!!!

My .684" balls are a bit undersize, but will work OK. A .703" ball would not fit in the case as that would not fit the chamber. An unsized MagTach case will chamber, but is a bit snug in the front 1/3rd of the case. The cases are listed as 2.4", however mine measure 2.450" which is close enough to 2.5" to suit me.

I loaded up 5 rounds in MagTech 16 bore brass with 3 drams (82gr.) of 3F, a few wads and .684" ball with the mouths crimped just over the centre of the ball holding them snugly due to the compression/springiness of the fibre wads. I lubed the fibre wads with my own BP soft mix of beeswax/olive oil. There is one 1/8" card wad on the powder, & 2, 1/2" wads between the powder and ball. I crimped the cases in a 12 bore paper-hull crimp starter, which is a smooth steel cone inside, no ribs. It is mounted in my old Herter's press - yeah, it's an antique - well, older than I am & I'm getting there. It will be cold when I shoot these and the soft lube may be necessary to help soften the fouling.

If I don't get out before Saturday, that will be when I try them. I suppose I should load up at least another 5 for testing, this time with 2 1/2 drams or 68gr. & of course, more wads to fill the space. If this was a modern gun, it would hold a healthy powder charge - at least 5 drams I'd think & would polax any bear I'd be likely to meet. I suspect 3 drams of 3F should deliver about 1,225fps with that ball, maybe 25fps more.

Lancaster, I bought a pound of Cerosafe and will get a chamber cast as soon as I polish my chamber a bit. It has a few rough spots I want to smooth out. Too, the brass will fit better once I get that done - nothing radical, mind.
