What's Your Safari Plans for 2009
      #123151 - 06/01/09 04:08 PM

I need to live vicariously again in 2009 through other people. What are your safari plans in 2009? What are you hunting and where?

2nd June returning for two weeks (alone this time, no family) to SA to Hunt Springbk with Andrew McLaren near Bloomfontein. Then leaving Andrew for 7 days in NW Limpopo hunting Eland, Kudu and management Kudu cows, Baboon and Impala.

Maybe get a Bushbuck if I can find the money......

Taking the CZ .308W again, only with a Kahles 4-12x52 for springbok (and Kudu). I'm working on what to take for the Eland.

Edit: Also going to get me some more of that Pinotage....

Shouldn't go this year, but you never know what comes up.
Would love another Jumbo or perhaps a Leopard?

I'm still trying to organise something for later this year. Not that I'm sure I want to sit in a hide long enough to get one, but what is the chance of getting a CITES permit to bring a leopard back to Australia . . . anyone . . . anyone?

Also, with various PHs telling me 'the lion is a 21-day species', am I to believe that we really need 14-21 days to get a lion or is it just a way to enhance the trophy fee?

I wish I could go this year and was prepared to do so but, unfortunately, I postponed my trip to 2010 based on my hunting partner's schedule. It turns out he won't be making the trip after all.

In June 2010, here are my plans:

Jan Oelofse Safaris
Namibia
10 days 1x1
PH - Josephus
Eland
Kudu
Gemsbok
Black Wildebeest
Zebra
Sable?? if funds allow

Leopard were banned from being imported into Australia. Has it changed?

Probably a 33% chance of getting a lion in any case. Depends ...

I believe one reason, primary or not, is supply and demand--therefore the parks departments realize this and yes, as you stated, a way for them to increase their income...however when spending that kind of money, I would rather have too much time than not enough...

I went with Chifuti this year in Zim---they were running 90% plus on lion for something like the last 3 or 4 years...they did not have a 21 day minimum at that time..however I did hear the price went up substantially since when I had booked it in 2006..

I hope a lot more of you have plans for 2009 because I'm planning to read your reports and turn green with envy. This year is for load development.

Isn't the percentage the outfitters usually quote, the percentage of the quota they fill? ie an outfitter which says they have a 100% success rate translates as 100% of the quota filled? ie if their quota is 5 lions, they get 5 lions, irrespective of whether they have 5 clients or 15 clients?

South Africa 30 April - 11 May. Rustenburg area about an hour and half northwest of Johannesburg for plains game. Currently planning on Gemsbok, Impala, Springbuck and Blue Wildebeest. Would like a Waterbuck if possible. Probaly going to be one of the "bang, how much did that just cost me"
things!!! I am going to need extra will power.

Thanks Guys, this thread is very enlightnening. Any opinions of the Kukuzans, Behati or Hunter's Quest operations would be appreciated. Also, is the Caprivi Strip in Namibia a viable area for buffalo or is there a big chance your beast might escape into another country?
Keep 'em coming.

MikeH416Rigby was there for buffalo last year so he should know.

The Caprivi Strip is about 80 kilometres wide though.

As for close to a boundary the only buffalo herd we looked at in 2006 were a hop skip and a jump away from the Matsuadona National Park boundary in the Omay, so breaking some bone would have been an objective. Can happen anywhere.

Thanks John,
I like the sound of Namibia, politically, and hope it might hold less danger for the traveller than certain other places nearby.

Do members consider it kosher to deliberately hunt lionesses? Is there a time of year when they're less likely to have dependent cubs?

Well as I've mentioned John, I'm trying to get to Zim in May for my first african hunt. Sable, eland, waterbuck, zebra and the biggest and ugliest warthog I can find. At this stage the Stantons are looking the goods, any comments??

Here's hoping!!!

If that falls through then it will be up to hunt hogs with Matt Graham in August and probably chase some sambar down in the hills over winter.

Hey John, what is your taste in reds?? I really want to catch up, and soon!!

Cheers,
Mark.

Try for late may and hunt both Mashura and Bubi.
A Bushbuck would be worth adding to the list of one presents itself .

No safari plans for me. We are not spending money due to the economic downturn and our new Marxist president who may ruin us all.

May I suggest a small correction? Should you not change it to read: " ...who will ruin....."? Any politician will ruin everything if given enough free reign!

In good hunting.

If you choose the 'right' hunting outfitter [and that's NOT Andrew McLaren Safaris!] a lion hunt, oops I mean shoot, can be done in one day! It is precisely these PH's who will tell you that a lion "hunt" is a 21 day affair - so as to boost income from daily rate fees.

Most unfortunately it is also very true ofthe few real HO's who can and do offer ethical lion hunting - it is something that to stand a good chance you do need time!

If some of your dreams come true, and you do find yourself looking seriously for an ethical lion hunt, please ensure that you select an outfitter of the second type.

In good hunting.

Andrew McLaren

Has anybody ever hunted with jan Oelofse in Namibia? I've mentioned my booking a couple of times, but I havene't seen or heard any comments about the company. They seem to be very reputable. I got a nice recommendation letter sent to Jan Oelofse of my behalf from Joe Prather at Griffin & Howe, who has also hunted with them. Still, I would like to hear other's experiences, if any.

I have not hunted with them however one of the booking agents I have used introduced them to me at one of the SCI shows ---he had all good things to say about them...I have known this booking agent for about 5 years and at this point, really trust him..for what that's worth...
