When Santa Brings Don S His Christmas Present . . .
      #123002 - 05/01/09 04:20 AM

Santa visited Don S and made sure that his Mauser collection now has one example of every sporting Mauser model. Please feast your eyes on this Type L Afrika Modell while Don comes in and posts more information.

Good hunting, everyone!

Once again, thank you Mehul for posting the photos on my behalf. Santa was indeed good to me this Xmas. After many years of searching for a decent African model, I was stunned when this one popped up at one of my local gun auctions. The Mauserholics out there will recognize the rare double square bridge solid left wall action coupled to a 700mm octagon to round barrel with full length matted rib. I have never before seen a Type L in this configuration. It also sports express sights with a Parker Hale "Sportarget" peep sight. It is post war engraved by well known local artist Alvin A. White who served many years as a master engraver with Colt. His mark is stamped under the floor plate. Normally I would shun something not done by the factory but have no problem making an exception in this case. Every piece & part is matching numbered to include the sling eyes. Enjoy.

don , to me it looks better than the full stocked one you have that is engraved from the factory ,it is most definetly in original condition , no reblue or anything and the engraving is exceptional , and a nicer caliber .i looked at the listing at amoskeag ,but the shitty real estate market is putting a damper on my toy money right now ..good luck with it..... btw,i dont know if you get my emails or not but you have an open invite to come by and see a few things i have.

good luck with it ..paul

Congratulations on a fine rifle and completing the set, so to speak. I echo Dale's comment.

I do wish you would publish a book based on your collection and knowledge of the subject.

Mehul, thanks for posting the pictures.

Rustam

Does anyone know the rationale behind the stock design for this rifle? Is the extra long (26")barrel and extended three quarter length foreend an accomodation to perceived Africa conditions, and if so, which?

It's hard to believe that a rifle like this was ever actually used in Africa, given the fact that the calibers in which it was commonly available (e.g. 9.3X62 and 10.75X68) translate to use in hunting dangerous game, which would place emphasis on a short, handy rifle.

The plain fact is that there was no rationale whatsoever. This was Mauser's idea of what was needed in Africa without consulting the people who actually did the hunting. That's why they did not sell many and that's why their hard to find. In spite of all this, Mauser kept this model in production for near 40 years. Go figure. BTW, the barrel is 28"

simpson ltd. of IL. had one about 3 months ago in (if i can remember), 8x60 a typical african style , sold for around 2k or maybe less lasted about 1 day on there site.as far as the stock goes some germans were just gone over them .they werent for the brit market

xausa , i have a griefelt in 11.2x60 schuler with a 28" barrel and 5 folding leaves so i guess whoever thought of whomever would be shooting these things, they must have figured on long distance shooting ,just imagine trying to shoot something at 500yards with this schuler round ,the drop is probably 4 feet , so there are a lot of things that dont make sense ,i dont even think you,d be allowed to take a shot that long by law these days ....paul

Think about the times. No TV, few moving picture shows and even few books with photographs. Information was still mostly word of mouth. And it must be remembered, Africa had only been explored (by Whitey) over the previous 30-40 years. There were still areas uncharted. For information coming from German East Africa (Tanzania) and German SW Africa (Namibia), there was probably amazement, if not disbelief, in the distances and game tenacity compared to a Mountain Chamois or a wild boar! Old Paul and Wilhelm probably thought, better make 'em long and hard hitting for the fellows going to the Dark Continent! Or maybe they just thought 'Africa Model' sounded cool!

I dont agree! The information, in this time, about hunting and game in foreign countries was very good! I have a lot of original hunting papers of the time between 1898 and 1913! The design of this rifle is a little bit british! May be a custom model. For a german rifle of this time ( proof stamps between 1891-1939 ) i miss the typical german open sights, the "stecher",and a scope!

New guy here but it was because of this rifle that I joined Nitro express. It is simply the best example of any model Mauser that i have ever had the priveledge of seeing. visions of this keep me awake at night planing to build something similar. In 9.3x62 it would make the complete set. I have built a 404 on a F N Colombian and am nearly finished a stalking rifle in 7x57. Once again, a truly beautiful rifle.
