August von Spieß had have in this times a cape gun and a drilling, both for the long 450 Express cartridge. Without experience he not realized that the chambers of the two guns had different dimensions.
Spieß fired all 3 barrels of his drilling. The smooth with round ball loads, on a bear when the wounded beast attack his stand. A reloaded but not resized cartridge, fired in the cape gun before, he take was sticking half way in the chamber so the drilling cant closed again. the bear take his coat for a last fight when spieß was able to remove the round with his knife, loaded another and kill him.
In this times reloading means only priming, fill in the powder load and set the bullet with the thump or whatever you have

“So I started hunting as young lieutenant in 1885”

. The red arrow show the teschner –collath safety( look at collath 500 double rifle here) so I can say without doubt that this is a teschner –collath also.

Georg Roth cartridge list 1927

11,6x82 ½ 450 is the designation for the german version of the 450 BPE, the cartridge was also in production with 60 and 65 mm long case but August von Spieß use the long case.

Interesting collector book for our friends from norway, printed in 1944 in Oslo fort he Deutsche Wehrmacht.

Very Nice! Great to have the history of the rifle and cartridge.
