M 95 cattle killer stutzen

get this old pic, colonel august von spieß with M 95 hunting rifle and one of the many cattle killers ( 20-25 I believe) he shot in the hungarian part of Transylvania befor WW 1. the Mannlicher M 95 is hard to find on old pics, most prefer Mauser 98 or the Mannlicher Schönauer. old soldiers like von Spieß take the military rifle. "Outside Romania, it is strongly associated with the novel Dracula, while within Romania and Hungary the region is known for the scenic beauty of its Carpathian landscape and its rich history" and for be the bear country in cental europe, a mix of khyber pass and canada
august von spieß started with a 450 BPE double, I will post this pic in double rifle part:




1914 Franz sodia/ Ferlach catalog with a M 95 mannlicher hunting rifle
for the prices: M 95 130-140 kronen
manlicher schönauer, all model's eqal 225 kronen
german M 88 hunting rifle 128-140 kronen

the mannlicher m 95 was very reasonable compared with a MS and have more or less the same price with M 88 but this action was very cheap to get as military surplus befor WW 1 from the german army.
big enigma is the new "neu" M 95 Exzelsior in 11,15mm for softpoints and strong nitro load, anyone heard about this?




georg roth cartridge catalog, the 8x50 R mannlicher softpoint hunting load is in the middle



hirtenberger have load the 8x50R softpoint till 1990 but then dropped

What a great pic!!

A couple friends have these rifles and I've been itching to get one...dirt cheap when they were a dime a dozen a few years ago. Great caliber, too. I've always wondered if they were ever used for hunting in Österreich or elsewhere in Central Europe.

yes all rifles showing have the original 8x50R mannlicher chamber

interesting update, a M 95 sporter with short magazin 2+1 now in 8x56 R M 30. havnt seen it in this caliber before, seems to be that the 8x50 R mannlicher was most times availbale.

I've often thought that these rifles offer interesting possibilities. Maybe a stalking rifle variant with a short forend, 2-leaf sights, 26" barrel, perhaps a reduced capacity magazine. Just thinking - What if Jeffrey or Westley Richards had obtained some actions and worked up some sporters back in 1909 - how would they have turned out?

Lancaster,

On the double rifle forum I posted a link to the website of a Slovenian gunmaker who makes sporters on M 95 actions. As I can't read the language, I couldn't figure anything out about the guns. I wonder how common these grand old rifles are as far as hunting use is concerned these days? Over here they come on sale at very reasonable prices on Gunbroker from time to time.

Interesting old pic of the bear and hunter from Transylvania. I have a wooden carved chess set from Transylvania but not one of these interesting rifles.

the M 95 isnt popular for building sporting rifles in austria anymore, you see this on the low prices asking for used guns including scope. people losing mind and sense and buying blaser rifles.
you can made beautiful from this stuff but the large amount of bulgarien surplus rifles in the united states will also give bubba a lot of possibilitys in the future.
I believe that all WW rifles give nice sporters, here are two examples:
