Went to an auction Sunday. There I saw a German drilling. The two upper smooth barrels were in 16 ga (possibly short chambers) and the lower rifled barrel was chambered for what was described as 11x62. Any one have any idea as to what this latter cartridge might be?
I did not get to see the markings uner the barrel, but would not have been overly surprised if they were either BP or Nitro proofs. The overall appearance suggested an age dating to just about the transition from black to smokeless. It was an underlever hammerless action.
I didn't think to look too closely at the barrel metal but I have the impression it was solid steel.
Could have been the 11x60R Mauser (also known as 43 Mauser and 11.15x60R). This was originally chambered in the Mauser military rifle in 1871. It became a popular sporting caliber as well.
its possible that it was the the mauser m71 cartridge but you yanks better now this and the dealer have measure a 11,2 x 62 and will see this when it was the fact. better idea is a chambering for the 11,5 x 60R450 or the 11,2x60R LK. the first is a german version from the 450 BPE and the second is 410 ga. brass case loaded with a bullet.
