404 Jeffery
      #121943 - 23/12/08 06:40 AM

Hello, again I'm bothering to all members of this wonderful forum. Well, I'm going to the point, as I have said on many occasions and I have asked and even a survey I have set my preferences caliber focus on the 416 or the 458 Rigby Lott, but I would like opinions on another cartridge that lately I read quite the 404 Jeffery. What is striking, "Is it pleasant to shoot, how it behaves when it comes to hunt dangerous wildlife?, Is it credible to stop the attack by a buffalo, elephant or similar animals? As I always say, forgive the inconvenience and thank you.

Merry Christmas to all and that 2009 brings you everything that you wish and lots, lots of health.

Oscar.

Oscar, I have been using a 404 Jeffery only twice since getting it from my gunsmith. He converted my CZ550 Safari Magnum from 375H&H to the 404J. I have only had a chance so far to use it at the range, but while shooting off hand and seated have found it to have not much more recoil than the 375H&H, with loads at the mid point between starting loads and maximum recommended. Sight recovery after recoil is quite quick. Hope this helps. Terry.

Oscar

I Have had a 404 for 30 years. I have shot Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo, Moose and a lot of small animals with it. Mine is a Jeffery and came with no recoil pad, only a steel but plate.

A couple of years ago I broke the original stock and had the new stock made as a copy, complete with putting the steel butt plate back on. It is as easy a shooting 40 cal as exists. It is probably also the most popular large caliber ever in Africa.

Thousands were made for settler and Game Department use and the 404 has killed many thousands of animals, large and small.

My choice for a 40 cal with no close second place.

I think it's a very nice cartridge, and with a lot of history. The struggle between the cartridges is difficult and hard, I am excited about one of these three rounds: 458 Lott, 416 Rigby and 404 Jeffery. Every time I'm more confused.

Thank you,

Oscar.

You have given a very important reason to choose one or the other, the recoil of the gun to shoot one of these "dinosaurs". I do what I do, what you will.

A hug,

Oscar.

Oscar,

I too use a 404 as my Buffalo rifle in the Northern Territory. It has proven to be totally satisfactory and is a good deal more pleasant to shoot than the other two. A big plus is that the rifle requires a 375 length action whereas the 416 requires a true mangnum action.

The 404 is mild but even when loaded with moden properllant to 416 Rigby velocities it is still more pleasant to shoot in my opinion.

As Mickey has stated he has a good deal greater experience than me with this cartridge but something to think about is that 2009 is the 100th anniversary of the grand old 404 a definate reason to get one!!!

Regards,

MOG

It's a good idea, as a celebration of the "birthday" of veteran Jeffery 404. I love reading your experiences, thanks. I still saving money ...

Happy Holidays,

Oscar.

Oscar, you might want to check out the following article, by a well respected author and hunter:

The second question answered sums things up pretty well.

Excellent article friend, I'm going to take into consideration when veteran cartridge 404, but I am a lover of the great batterers as the 458 Lott. As I have much time left to save, I will go later to decide, but I beg you to continue giving me opinions and experiences.

A thousand thanks,

Oscar.
