Does WR put the rear sight too far back?

Here is a Westley Richards .318. The rear sight is too far back for my preference.

Here is an Army Navy .470, which has the rear sight in a better position for me:

Typically, the smaller bored doubles will have the rear sight positioned farther back for more precise aiming due to the longer sighting plane, while the stopping rifles will have theirs positioned farther forward to fascilitate speed. This may not be true in all cases.

A sight that seems too far back indicates the increasing age of the shooter...

Seriously, too far back and precision CAN BE affected as the sight appears fuzzy and the longer sighting plane advantage is eroded. Unless a close peep is used.

Interestingly, this was a criticism of the 1903 Springfield sight that pops up in the old timer's writings from time to time.

Anyway, 500, this is dramatically demonstrated when shooting shoulder-stocked pistols where the stock is more of a disadvantage than an advantage, as stock positions the rear sight too close to the eye and the increased steadiness offered by the stock is offset by the close rear sight.

Definitely a worthy consideration. However, with a properly dimensioned stock, the rear sight cannot be placed too close to the eye by virtue of the stock. It seems that the small bored doubles, in general, have more distance between the front and rear sights than do the big bore doubles.

Westley Richards do seem to often position the rear sight way back.
Webley got it right IMO as far as the rear sight location goes, which is just back fom the front of the fore-end.
But then, Webley got pretty well every thing else right with their double rifles anyway!

Rear sights on doubles don't worry me too much however.
The front bead is more important to me, as is correct gunfit.

Not all are toward the rear. In one of my old catalogs there is a copy of a order form and on the form it asks the purchaser if they want 1/3 rib or 1/4 rib fitted. Then of course there is a selection of rear sights, but back to the rib spec's, a 1/3 rib would obviously be 1/3 the way down the barrel from the breech where as a 1/4 would indeed be 1/4 of the way from the breech towards the muzzles. I would presume that the one example you have chose to highlight was ordered with a 1/4 rib, thus placing the rear sight closer to the eye, alongating the sighting plane.

All a matter of personal choice I would think, at least while that is still legal in the U.S.A. My perference is for them to be BIG and in the right spot when I am needing them.

I won't bring up where I like a Ghost Ring mounted.................
