Diagrams?
      #121430 - 18/12/08 05:34 AM

Can you refer me to any good diagrams and explainations of how double rifles--or shotguns, for that matter--work? Prefer online; but if I have to order an obscure and expensive book; so be it.

Lots of references on practically any type action that you want to study--except coherent descriptions of how double barrels work(Double Barrels AND Breaktop revolvers...)--and I know that I'm not alone--I've heard several rather experienced gunsmiths say they hate working on doubles; because they're skull-crackingly complicated.

By the way, I'm new to your forum; and I can tell that I will like it.

Thanks.

Welcome to the site!

I think that once you take a look at them, you'll find that *if anything* doubles are bone-crackingly simple.
There are many different types though, and a basic tour to familiarize yourself could start with WW Greener's The Gun and it's Development.
There are many other texts, but let that be a start.

Copy this
http://books.google.com/books?id=3HMCAAAAYAAJ
then paste it in a browser destination bar.
From there, click the link on that page that will let you download the book.

Cheers

A load of neat exploded views here:

Unfortunately, the only SXS is the Savage which has a lot of parts.

Here the simplicity of the trigger plate action can be appreciated.

For British double guns, the best 'how it works' diagrams are in Crudgington & Baker's 2-volume set: "The British Shotgun". It is probably out of print, so be prepared to get reamed by Amazon.

The name Burrard rings a bell. A famous book with good illustrations, sorry I can't think of the name.

Gerald Burrard. Writing primarily on the "English game gun".

True,
but I imagine the lock work is much the same in double rifles unless you want articulated triggers and provisions to stop doubling.
