450 BPE vs 450 NE
      #121147 - 14/12/08 10:19 AM

What are the twist rates for 450BPE/NFB and 450 Nitro barrels?? I'd appreciate any industry specs as well as anyone's personal rifle/barrel/load specs on their rifles.

I'd expect the BPE's to have substancially slower twists than a NE. This is due to the light-for-calibre black powder bullets compared to normal heavier for calibre nitro-express loads.
Seems to me I read the .450NE had somewhere around an 18" to 20" twist to stabilitze it's 480gr. bullet.
The .450 BPE normal 1890's factory loaded bullets ran 270gr. and had a twist-rate of between 40" and 60". The quicker of the two twists might stabilize a bullet up to about 360gr. weight, which was used by some African hunters.

My Purdy 450 BPE made in 1895 has aproximately 1 in 28" twist. It stabilizes 350-360gr bullets just fine. These BP guns weren't made for heavier bullets.

Hey purdy,

Welcome to the forums.

You should post photos of your Purdey .450 on the DR Photo Archive Forum as we would love to see it. I have a Purdey .500 BPE made in 1894. It would be great to see yours.
