Wanted: .303 British chambering reamer
      #121133 - 14/12/08 06:58 AM

Does anyone out there have a used chamber FINISHING reamer in calibre .303 British that they are interested in selling? The barrels that I'm using to build a double rifle are from 1910 Ross rifles so they are already chambered. However, after machining, they are about .030" short and need to be freshened out. I'm trying to avoid the $100.00 plus shipping, duties, and taxes if I order a new Clymer reamer from Brownells. That's a lot of money to spend for 30 minutes work and then to probably never use the thing again. I AM aware that there are one or more outfits in the USA that rent them, but I don't think that they do cross-border stuff.

Hussey500,
I figure that I'll be ready for it in about a month, what with Christmas and al.

ronvella,

I may be ready to part with it in about 30-60 days, but I will probably prefer to rent it to you versus selling it.It is made by Pacific and will have been used by me only for two barrels total. Throat is set to be compatible for good seating depth with 174 and 215 grain bullets. Is that acceptable?

Ronvella will have to pay provincial sales and federal goods and services tax on the declared value of the reamer just as if he was buying it. Them's the rules - matters not what he actually pays - it's the insured value or the declared value- whichever is highest that get's taxed.

We cannot rent anything from a US company as such, as the CDN' Customs is afraid it will not be returned or that this is a scam like the 'gift' box on the declaration form to get away with paying less tax. Such is the state of affairs. BTW - 'gift' is taxed same as any other parcel.

Hussey500,
That would be perfect for me. Let me know when you're ready to proceed. I have already loaded up 200 rounds with the Hornady 174 grain RN bullet so the throat should be good. I have a "connection" in Wichita through which I could avoid the duty/tax problem both going and coming.

Many thanks,

Ron.

Would such duty not be able to be reclaimed if it re-export could be proved? It may be putting it in the too hard basket but I wonder if someone near to Hussey might be travelling "North of the Boarder" & would be able to take it in their CHECKED bagged & drop it in the post/courier bag once in Canada. It may be that posting it back would cause probs though. The other thing that occurs to me is that Canada must have a heap of Gunsmiths with 303 reamers languishing in the corners of their shops. Might be worth hitting the yellow pages & letting your fingers do the walking.
Steve.

Ron,

I will be in touch with you as the time nears, but as a fallback, contact me in 60 days if you do not hear from me by then. Good luck with your project. I would love to hear about it and see photos, PM me when you can.

Ron,

Turns out that I have rougher and finisher reamers so you are good to go.

Steve - the story I got from Customs, was that they'd run into a problem (their words) with Reamer Rentals dot com - renting reamers to Canadians - mostly B.C. - imagine that. Customs had no way (according to them) of checking that the reamers were actually returned (normal postoffice mail - zipp - gone) & therefore surmised the reamers stayed, free of 30% duty + Provincial sales tax at the time. See, their literature states if reamers are not returned within so many days, you pay the full purchase price.

Now, we have only a Federal Goods and Services tax + Provincial Sales tax + $5.00 customs handling fee. ALL goods coming into Canada via mail or truck are assessed this fee - if they don't slip through. Sometimes they do and a lot depends on the size of the package. At different times I've received brass, bullets, tobacco delivered to my door - no charges - you just never know if something is going to cost or not. Just before my Soule tang sight arrived costing me $47.00 taxes, I'd received 100 rounds of .45/70 brass with no extra charges. You just never know.
Machine parts covers a lot of this response - 'ho-hum- boring' no need to check that one category - sometimes.

I had a deal to trade rifle scopes with a chap in the Wyoming. My 8-32 for his 6-24 - straight across. No deal with customs here unless I wanted to pay taxes on the full Canadian purchase price of the scope coming in - some $150.00 worth of taxes - didn't seem worth the trade afterall. So much for Free Trade.

Hussey500,

I will do that. I sawed the 20 gauge barrels off yesterday and delivered the monoblock, thereby created, to my machinist friend, this morning, to be bored out and threaded. I have the shanks of the rifle barrels already turned to 0.750" . One is between centres in my South Bend, ready to be threaded 3/4"-32TPI, but I won't do that until I get the mono-block back from Bill, so that I can cut the threads for a good, close, fit. Many thanks and Merry Christmas to you and yours from The Great White North.
Ron.
