Osa Johnson Mauser
      #120755 - 10/12/08 02:07 AM

Just saw this on GI.
http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail.cfm?id=100065211&string=s=today

Very nice gun - with provenance.

I had a Mauser which was said to belong to the Johnsons as well, but alas, no proof.
When I was researching that gun, I wasn't even able to come up with a picture of Osa with a Mauser. Seems she always had a Winchester lever, or an '03 Springfield based bolt gun.

Could this be it?

A bit much for impala, but who knows. This one is a little clearer:

What do you think it needs? Maybe a set of weaver bases and rings with a Leupold 4X?

Seriously....I think it will sell quickly, even at that price.

Strong work!
I Married Adventure was the first safari/exploration book I ever read.
Drawn to the library shelf by that distinct zebra cover.
I guess that started it all - what a glorious downward spiral it has been!

A great gun all on its own. Even better with documented provenance - worth every penny and more I should think.

WOW!!!

Bob you rascal!!

THAT is a great 9.3x62!!

Big congrats on plucking that little peach right off the tree!

Gonna be spendy tho.

Now you have to make a trek to the Dark Continent to retrace Johnsons' steps! What a great hunt that would be!!

Thanks guys! I'm really looking forward to receiving the rifle.

You might want to take a look at the thread: my trip to the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum.

Also, I wonder if this is the same rifle?:

See the thread: Osa & Martin Johnson - Photo Archive

Bob:
What a story. I read the Osa and Martin Johnson story about a year ago. What a life and what a "gal"! She seemed to know her rifles. I like the photo of the big Buff charging and her standing ground with the .405 Win 1895.
Best regards and congrats.

Bob,
That sure is a very special rifle!
Great to see that it will end up in the hands of someone who obviously has a very strong interest and connection with the history of the Johnsons.
Well done mate, I'm green with envy!

Well, I'm sure you realize that the rifle is going to be shipped to Todd's shop. I bet you could go by his shop and take a look at it if you'd like!!

I wonder if the museum has a log of the cargo which went on their trips.
I am not aware if there was a process of "declaring" firearms or other personal items in those days. I doubt it.
Perhaps the guns were logged when the hunting liscenses were taken out?

Sure would be something to actually place that gun in Osa's hands on a particular expedition or hunt!

I am really glad for you and thought you might have a serious interest.

Now is it going to be a wall hanger, or used with care on a future hunt?

Thanks John!

Well, first I'll have my gunsmith check it out thoroughly. Check for oil damaged wood and repair it, check the bedding, etc. Of course, the most important thing is proper restoration/repair if needed while keeping the rifle original. If the gun is safe to fire, then I will definitely shoot it a few times.

I MIGHT use it to hunt a deer or a feral hog here in Texas while being very careful with it in the field, of course. I will most definitely NOT risk taking it to Africa (or take it on a commercial airline at all). Too much chance of damage to the rifle or having it stolen. Kind of a shame really.... It would be cool to take the old rifle back to Africa but I just don't want to chance it.

After I've played with it some and enjoyed having it in my home, I may talk to the Safari Museum to see if they would like to have it on loan from me in order to display it at the museum for a while.

Cheers!

Oh, I hear ya! Don't worry. I'm going to be very careful to preserve the collector value and history of this rifle. Any work done on it will be proper restoration/preservation work (if any is needed).

BTW: My gunsmith friend (and FFL dealer that will be receiving the rifle) had a very nice chat with Monte today about Mausers.

Hey Bob , I sold monty a bunch of guns last year mostly griffins ,hoffman Springfields, etc. We were chatting about a Jeffery he wanted to sell me,I told him I was in the midst of wrapping up a development in Boston that didn't bring in the cash I thought it would. But I did tell him the only thing that would make me spend any money now was a 400/350 rigby, but it must be in original condition. Well, 2 days later he called and said it was on the way to my house if i like it send a check. Not being in a good spending position I was hoping it was going to be a mess.....not.. The gun was in original and unaltered condidtion and something that I wanted for a long time. So it now sits in my gun safe. Yup, Monty know's how to find them he's also a good man to deal with. .......Paul

What's the LOP - appears to be quite short (as the lady)

The cost of obtaining trophies collected and donated to museums used to be tax deductible in the US I believe. If this is still the case?

probably a book on gunstocks.
For a lady's gun, the toe of the stock should be reduced (and maybe have more cast-off than usual), to avoid painful contact with soft tissue.

I just couldn't resist adding one more photo to this thread. The photo below is one of five original photos that I have purchased. This one is a fashion shot for the March 1940 issue of Hollywood Magazine.

The second scan is the description that was on the back of the photo. Notice the handwritten note that states, "In coat made of gazelle she shot herself." Sure wouldn't see that in a magazine about celebrities today!!! Anyway, I thought some here might enjoy seeing the photo.

Cheers!

Bob,

Amazing stuff!

I have a request - since you are actively collecting some lovely information, please write an article for our E-zine about this whole process of finding the rifle, tracking down all this fantastic supporting information etc. Believe me, it would make for some lovely reading whenever any of us want to relax and enjoy ourselves and it would also be a learning piece for anyone else who is inspired to track down and buy a similar treasure. There is no rush but whenever you have time . . .

Thanks in advance and congratulations again!

Great stuff Bob!

This is a really fun and interesting "vicarious" experience for me. Really glad you got the rifle and I personally hope you add a ding or two to the stock. It's a tool and IMO should keep on doing what the fellow who built it spent his labor for.

By the way...Sarah Palin wasn't too proud not to offer the reporter moose chili. "Close enough {to Osa} for gubmn't work!"

There is only one answer for that. You must take it to Africa, shoot an antelope and have a coat made.

Just a quick follow up:

Osa's rifle arrived at my gunsmith's shop (Todd Johnson) on December 26. Todd called me this morning (Dec 27) with a preliminary report.

Serial number is 105930 which, according to Jon Speed's book, puts the year of manufacture as 1930-1931. "BUG" proof marks. Length of pull is 13.0 inches.

I have not seen the rifle yet but according to Todd the rifle is in immaculate condition; almost pristine. Todd said the seller's photos (see the photos I posted earlier in this thread) don't do the rifle justice. Blueing is about 95-98% with age related patina (which Todd described as beautiful). Stock and recoil pad are in excellent condition. Bore is in excellent condition and rifling is crisp. Fore end tip is authentic horn.

Due to the Christmas holiday (and out of town family staying at his house) and him being under the weather the past couple of days, Todd told me he had not pulled the action from the stock yet. He doesn't want to work on it until he's feeling better. So, no detailed report yet on other proof marks, etc. at this time. Rest assured that I will follow up with more information in the coming weeks.

Cheers!
-Bob F.

Well, it's been about one year since this thread was started so I thought I would post an update.

The small amount of preservation and restoration work the rifle needed has been finished for several months now. Don't worry you Mauser collectors..... NOTHING was done to detract from its history and heritage. It just needed a little tender loving care.

The rifle is still at Todd's shop (my gunsmith) for now. I just haven't picked it up and brought it home with me yet. BUT, I'll let you in on a little secret..... Shhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone!

I left the rifle at Todd's shop so that a well-known gun writer could see, handle, and take photos of it. He and I have been corresponding for the last year or so concerning an article that he is doing on the rifle. It does take time for a gun writer to get a publisher interested in the subject matter, do research, take photos and write an article. I offered to let him shoot it and to actually hunt with it at a place here in Texas that is owned by a friend of mine. Unfortunately, his schedule just never worked out to be able to do that.

Now, I can't say much more than that at this time. But, I believe that in 2010 you'll be able to buy a new issue of a publication that will feature an article on Osa's rifle.

Don't worry..... When I get the "go ahead" from the author, I will be sure to post on here the name of the publication and when it will be available.

So... Be sure to stay tuned......

Cheers!

Both my parents are from the same town in Kansas that Osa was from. A month ago, while visiting, my wife and I went to the museum there. I was very impressed except where are those big rifles. A lady there told me most the rifles were in personal collections, and a certain gentleman from Texas just bought one. Good to know it's another nitro express member.

apr1775 ,

Thanks for sharing that story!

I am really amazed that someone at the museum knew about the rifle having been purchased recently (within the last year or so). I guess they found out about it via the Internet. Small world....

I traveled to Chanute, Kansas back in November of 2008 to visit the Safari Museum. Just a few weeks after that was when I was able to purchase Osa's rifle. Kind of a strange coincidence. Or, maybe it was just meant to be....

Here's the post I made back in November 2008 about my trip to Chanute and visiting the museum:

my trip to the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum

Bob,

If you back to Chanute, let me know. I know people in the area; that way you won't be alone. My grandparents know the history of the area because they lived it and they are still very sharp. Some very nice deer and turkeys have been spotted on my parents' place, but they don't hunt although they will allow friends. I also have a friend there who worked for Hogdon powder for thirty-some years doing load development.

Any chance of getting some large detailed color photos of the mauser for the museum?

I haven't corresponded with the gun writer doing the article for a couple of months now. Coincidentally, I was getting curious myself as to when (and if) the article will be published. I'll try to remember to send him an email in the next few days and see what's up with the article.

Just an update on the article about the rifle:

I've heard back from the gun writer that did the article about Osa's rifle. Be on the lookout for the new edition of Gun Digest (the annual book) which should be out in late July or so.

Here's the email I received today (I'm not revealing the gun writer's name at this time):

-------------------------------------
Sun, Apr 25, 2010

Bob,

Good hearing from you. The story and photos of the Osa rifle are at Gun Digest with the editor. I showed him some of the photos at SHOT and he seemed excited about it. I've not heard back from him since I sent my stuff, including the Osa piece, in to him, except for a short note telling me he had them and thanking me for sending them in. I may hear nothing further until the book comes out, probably in late July. Anyway, I'll let you know when I hear something further.

Cheers!

One other quick note:

I FINALLY brought the rifle home last Friday from my gunsmith's shop. It's in beautiful shape/condition. I'll try to find some time to take a few photos of it. I'm not a very good photographer but I will see what I can do.

Cheers!

Well, I finally got around to taking some photos of the rifle.

I'm not a very good photographer and I only have a little Canon PowerShot A590IS camera. It's an 8 mega pixel camera that's a couple of years old. I did the best I could taking the photos. I hope you enjoy the photos.

One of the things I really enjoy about Osa's rifle is that it is chambered for the 9.3x62 cartridge. A few years before I even knew of Osa's Mauser, I hunted with my CZ 550 American, chambered in 9.3x62, on a plains game hunt in South Africa back in 2005. The 9.3x62 has become one of my favorite cartridges.

So, besides owning her rifle, I feel that Osa and I share a little something in common. We've both used the 9.3x62 in Africa. I get a real kick out of that.

Cheers!

Well, after a long while, I'm kicking this thread back up in order to give everyone a heads up....

After a long wait, an article about Osa Johnson's Mauser rifle has been published in the 2012 edition of Gun Digest.

Here's a scan of the first page of the article (which I have made small on purpose so that it is difficult to read on here as this is copyrighted material).

The article is by Tom Turpin with the color photos by Terry Wieland.

Anyway, I just thought some folks on here might like to know. Pick up a copy of Gun Digest if you'd like to read the article.

(Note: I have no affiliation with Gun Digest. I have not and will not be receiving any form of compensation from them.)

Cheers!

Hey Bob,

Not a problem. Many of us know your affection for the historical Osa!

Thanks for the heads up and graphics.

I will seek out a copy, perhaps a friend in the USA can pick one up, as I don't know if we et these here in Oz (?).

At some point in time, I'd like to, or if someone else does it, put together a large portfolio of Osa and Martin's photos and story on the NE Ezine forum. As an enjoyable record easy to find.

Good to see you here again Bob, please stay around and share a beer with us and have a chat too.

Well, now, going to have to buy that Digest, now. I haven't bought a Gun Digest in many years.

You do own a treasure, Bob, and you're absolutely right to be proud of it!

Thanks for this and I will get Gun Digest when it is available on Amazon.

Good hunting!

Guys,

Thanks so much for your kind replies. I very much appreciate it.

I hope Mr. Turpin and Gun Digest don't mind me posting this on here, but here's a little excerpt from the article that I'm very proud of:

BTW, Mr. Turpin seems to be a VERY nice guy and a real gentleman. I had a few conversations with him on the phone and exchanged several emails with him while he was working on the article. Heck, he even purchased first editions of two of Osa's books, and also a biography about the Johnsons that I recommended to him, and read all of them before he wrote his article. To me, that says he was truly interested in the subject matter.

Anyway, Cheers to all!
-Bob F.

Well done Bob. As always you are a sharing and helpful guy on a subject which greatly interests you.

These stories, threads and posts, on historical characters are always enjoyable. From a age of exploration and safari we can only dream about today.
