modern cartridges for black powder replicas
      #120578 - 08/12/08 12:50 AM

Did somebody ever use this brass cartridges?
I think that the short ones are for gallager and smith replicas, but I don't know what replica could fire the long one.A friend of mine suggested me that it is for the chassepot, but it is hard to believe, since the original chassepot cartridge had a primer on the bottom whereas this one has a flash hole only.Any ideas?

I believe that maynard rifles used something like this. Except they had a flange on the rear end of the cartridge. Ballard also used something like this as well. Since they look to be unfired could they not be some kind of a "one off" that was built as a proof of concept thing. The civil war smith and gallagher cartridges also come to mind. The gallagher had a somewhat tapered case with a wedding ring around the front and the smith I think was just a straight case, although I could be wrong here.
A buddy once had a smith replica and always griped about the smith cases he used. Would always get stuck in the chamber. We measured the chamber I.D. and the cartridge O.D. and found that the cases had a slight taper. Jury rigged a mandrel in my lathe and took off some metal, basically just a skim cut. After that no problems. So thats about the extent of my meager knowledge. Frank

what you have are brass cases for .45 and .54 cal sharps replika rifles. because there 4 or 5 different maker over the last 30 years and all have different chambers for rifles and carbine's there are also lot of different brass cases. not so popular in the states but most sharps shoter's in europe use such brass cases.

dixie gun works had have all the cases for breechloaders with seperat priming once and I have them laying around here. here are pics from the dgw site for some of them

.54 Burnside

.50 Gallagher

.50 Smith
