Not many doubles for sale.
      #120168 - 03/12/08 11:58 AM

Just a quick browse yielded (relatively) few double rifles for sale. The market must have settled down. Those of us who wanted one (or three) have them - and intend on holding on. I sold my Merkel and Jeffery last year when the profit margin and timing was spot on.

What I have now suits me. However I'd love to have a Merkel .500 before Black Osama bans all 50 cal.

I have really really considered a 50 BMG just to stick it to them.

How about you?

I've noticed the same - the ones on offer have been around for a while.
There are some deals out there though, depending on your budget. If I had the loot, the Churchill 470 on gunsinternational would be the boxlock of choice. Seems correctly priced compared to most of the other big bores.
Also agree on the 50BMG.
A semi-auto Barrett is surely a sound investment right now. That $10K will be $20K within two years IMO, allowing there is no ban on projectiles.
Lesson is: STOCK UP NOW!!

I am worried that President Hussein will classify the 50 BMG as a destructive device and require class III registration. I am not a 50 BMG shooter, but that would be both wrong and a pain in the butt.

The real bitch would be a "50 caliber" ban.

Doesn't take much...

I have a few nice nitro doubles that I plan on having consigned at Dallas and Reno. The market is still pretty strong for quality double rifles.

There was a nice 500 Nitro Evans sold today at Bonhams for $28,600.

Bolt action rifles over 50 are destructive devices and are regulated by the NFA. Double are exempt from this classification by the ATF. Assuming there's some logic to the law-making and a "50-cal" ban was put into effect, it wouldn't affect your double. Case in point: today a 577, 600 or 700 bolt rifle would have to be registered with the ATF as a destructive device. Under the same law, your 577 NE double does not.

I'm not following you here.
A 500 rimless is a .511" bullet, a 505 Gibbs is a .505" bullet. Both over "50cal"

You're exactly right. However, the ATF doesn't appear to pay as much attention to the actual bore diameter as they do the name of the cartridge.

"Category I - Firearms" are those "firearms to caliber .50 inclusive."
"Category II - Artillery Projectors" are "guns over caliber .50..."

These and other weapons are all defined in "The United States Munitions List."

Also look at "The National Firarms Act" Title 26, United States Code.
Chapter 53
5845 Definitions

(f) Destructive device. -- The term "destructive device" means... (2) any type of weapon by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, the barrel or barrels of which have a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter, except a shotgun or shotgun shell which the Secretary finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes;

Respectively, they refrence ".50" and "one-half inch". So why is it that a 50 BMG (.510), 500 Jeffery (.510) and 505 Gibbs (.505) are considered sporting cartridges? I have not been able to find the answer to that. But it's clear in reading the law that a "gun over caliber .50" or one with a "bore of more than one-half inch in diamter" are classified as "artillery projectors" and/or destructive devices and are NFA weapons (unless you receive an ATF exemption letter denoting your cartridge as for "sporting puposes".

I do have a letter from the ATF stating that double rifles are not subject to the classification of the NFA.

The 600 overkill and 700 AHR bolt action guns are also considered sporting guns, the ATF has signed off on them too. Wayne of AHR has the details.

The biggest problem is finding more than one in one hundred Screeners at the airport who can read, much less understand the rules!

Stock up now is an understatement. The USA is in deep doo doo when the economy straightens out, and he has time to re-write ALL the gun laws.
