The best rimfire bolt rifle?
      #120122 - 03/12/08 06:32 AM

What is the best rimfire bolt actioned rifle now avaiable ?

Here is the one that i think should be on the top.

Sako quad vamint, here with both a 22LR and 17HMR barrel. The barrels a easy to switch in a couple of seconds with only a hexkey.

Personoally, I don't like the Sako Quad. I'm sure it's a fine rifle, but the modernistic styling doesn't appeal to me. The previous Sako model was very nice, but by the time I had made up my mind to get one, they had been discontinued. A friend has two, and both are extremely accurate, small, and compact.

When I couldn't get the Sako, I looked into the Kimber. The rifle is a little bigger than the old-model Sako, but just as accurate. Mine routinely shoots 1/4-inch groups at 50 yards, although the average is about 1/2 inch. The wood is beautiful, so much so that a friend of mine bought one for looks alone. He had a small problem with his, and Kimber fixed it, provided a new stock in upgraded wood, and threw in an additional magazine. The problem was minor, so much so that I can't for the life of me remember what it was. His rifle also regularly shoots 1/4-inch groups, with about a 1/2-inch average. I vote for the Kimber as the best, current production, 22 long rifle hunting gun. It's also the prettiest.

Take care, Tom

Well, not quite current production, but my all-time favorite is the Winchester Mod. 52C. I have a target rifle whose barrel is shortened to 22", with a custom sporter stock, all topped with a Leupold 3.5-10 EFR AO scope. Wicked accurate!

I would say alot of this will be a matter of personal taste and opinion. That said I am very partial to a Steyr Zephyr, that would be my ultimate .22. I really like a Kimber of America ones as well. There are some wonderful Kimber of Oregon one's with all the bells and whistles on them that are for sure a Best Gun.

Wow, this is a great question and one that should get responses from all over the map.

My favorite .22 is my Romanian M1969 trainer. I filed off all tool marks and had it reblued. I also reshaped the stock and bedded it and added a Leupold one-piece base mounted backwards and a Leupold 2x7 scope installed.

It is a razor on ground squirrels and the like. Great trigger, great balance and the whole deal including rebluing was about $150, not counting the scope.

The now available part might be tough. I think these things dried up a year or so ago. I should have bought 10.

Not sure of current offerings, but Kimber made their Super America with a quarter rib and an ebony forend tip - I would still like to get my hands on one of those!
As for classics, the Winchester 52 sporters get a lot of attention, but my favorite is my old Winchester model 69. The 69 had a Springfield type safety knob on the back of the bolt unlike the later 69A models.
This one my grandfather customised, and looking at the bore, there is no reason it should shoot as well as it does. This rifle has been the first shooting experience for just about everybody in my family and will be for many to come!

My vote goes to the Anschütz 1710.

I think I would get an Anschutz barreled action and then ask a US custom gunsmith who specialises in bolts to rebuild it, James Tucker for example...I did investigate this once but the ultimate price would make your eyes water. I bought a Volquartsen instead and saved A LOT of $$$ best, Mike

IMHO for the money the CZ family of bolt action .22lr offerings are a fine choice. When I shoot mine at the gun club I belong too, people are always commenting on its outstanding performance. I paid a bit over 200.00 with tax and it shoots with much higher priced guns. I like the Cooper rifles too. My .17HMR is a true one holer.

Agree with the above as to CZ---for the money, not much to complain about..Have a couple of Anshutz's...and like them alot--very accurate as well--however for about 1/3 the cost...my little CZ with set trigger shoots every bit as well at both 50 and 100 yards as do the others..

In years past, I really liked the old Remington nylon stock 66---also have a couple of Marlin lever actions--lots of fun to shoot..

Another vote for CZ/BRNO .22 Sporters...

50 years old, or 5 days old, they shoulder, point and shoot very well...

(Don't ask how many I have, my wife might read this...and then I'd be in trouble. )

I would've had Cooper on my list but I've boycotted them because of the recent debacle with their President. I would say that it's hard to go wrong with either the Kimber Super America or the Anschutz. I sure wish Anschutz would upgrade their wood!

I to have been using the CZ 452 for ages and have found it to be very accurate.Another .22 that i have is the Remington youth model(bolt action)with Lyman peep sights and it is really extremely accurate to.

Not wishing to hijack this thread, this is neither a bolt action, nor the best.
I am just saying goodbye to her.
She was sitting unloved on a gunshop shelf and I have always had a thing for scruffy skinny birds.
I ran her through the shop on a whim . She went to a new home last week and the £ 100.00 I got for her wouldent cover the blue job
I just hope that she will be passed down and make a few more men smile over the years to come.

Goodbye darling !

While they haven't been made in a very long time the Springfield 1922's and M2's are still readily available on the used market. They would have to get my vote for the best rimfire bolt gun.
