First posting - Ruger No.1 416 Rigby
      #119405 - 24/11/08 08:38 AM

Hi, this is my first posting. I am in the process of acquiring a Ruger No1 in 416 Rigby. I would be grateful for any tips and advice the forum members can give me. This will be the first No 1 that I have owned and presently the largest calibre I have is a 375 H & H.

I would be especially interested in relaoding information use ADI powders. I intend to use Woodleigh 410 grain pills.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Paul,
Welcome to N.E , your choice of .416Rigby in a No.1 is a desicion I had to make not long ago but I chose the .450/.400 now offered by Ruger my reasons where that the 450/400 has a rimmed case which aids in extraction, traditional cartridge for single shot rifles where as the 416Rigby is essentially a bolt rifle cartridge, also the 450/400 feels better and is more balanced than the 416Rigby which I found to be to heavy in the barrel, I would go for the 450/400 as it shoots a 400g bullet as does the 416Rigby but if happy with the 416Rigby go for it!

Don't fill the case up with powder!
My friend Tryg used to load his CZ-550 that way with AR2209, and bloody hell did it boot!
Nick Harvey's reloading manual is a perfect place to commence your search for loading data. Try his starting loads, you probably won't need to go far past that!

The ADI webpage is OK too, they list 89gr AR2209 for 2333fps as a starter. You can use slower powder like AR2213 or AR2217 but that will only increase the recoil.

Thanks for the info. I chose the 416 over the 450/400 becaue I could get one second hand with dies and cases cheaper than a new 450/400. I still want a 450/400 and a .404. I'm left handed and a Ruger No1 seemed to be the way to go.

Paul, I forgot to mention:
I load that 410gr .416 Woodleigh in my .416 Taylor at just 2280 fps and it absolutely stuns big buffalo bulls.
If well-placed, one-shot kills are the norm, so your Ruger No.1 should be no handicap.

Hi guys, also my first post. I'm also after a Ruger no-1 in 416 Rigby. Couldn,t find one and had to settle for now on a baby 45/70 in the same rifle, just to play! Also have a 416 Rem in a Winchester model 70 and a CZ 550 in 458 lott. Just found this website tonight and it looks great. I certainly have been bitten by this big bore bug!!

Don't have a No1 in 416 Rigby but do have one in a CZ550. I just use loads from the Nosler book and have no problem with them. Actually I use the minimum load and the last Elephant I took did not complain. I like the No1's and have them in 9.3x74r,405Win,and 450/400.

Thanks for all the info. I might never get a chance to bag an elephant, but I might just get a wascally wabbit.

Cheers

Paul
