There you are mate. Import them and start your own kennel.

I'll buy one.

Pity but there are other breeds that will do the job too.

Bakes could start a breeding programme, if he wasn't scared of taking the skin of his knees

Hi John!

Nice to be back here!

I can tell you some about the dogs you wrote about, they are quite common here. I've hunted with a lot of them, also the Vorsteh you've got as a background picture on your computer.

About the Jagdterrier, it's a small hunting machine. Big risk it will be hurt by wild boar because it's very offensive. Here it's called the hunters small allround dog, and the Vorsteh is the big allround dog. I would not buy a Jagdterrier if I had small children or other dogs especially not of the same gender. The most of the Jagdterriers I've met is a little bit to sharp for my taste. I'd rather go for the Vorsteh, it's perfect for hunting wounded animals as well. And a good breed for bird hunting - it's allround. The only problem is that it's big.

If you shall hunt wounded wild boar, forget about the spaniels, most of them aren't tough enough. But remember this advice is from the other side of the globe, maybe it's different in Australia.

I hope you'll find a nice allround dog! Good luck!

Linda

Good to see you back. You will have to tell us how your dog is doing? Ended up a male rather than a female if I remember.(?)

Jagdterriers are out for me for the forseeable future as they do not appear to be in Australia yet and importing a dog takes a long time with quarantine (many months) and lots of $. Plus I feel it is not fair on the dog. If a breeder brings them in then I would re-visit it.

Never heard of a Vorsteh before.

I'll probably get another GSP or if not a Jack Russell. Not for a year or so.

My new dog is a male, that's right. I was planning to have a female, but nature was against me. He's very interesting, full of energy and today he's 10 months old. I've been training a lot with him, but not hunted yet. I think he will be fine.

Here is a picture of Zeke
Take care!

Put me down for one or two.
I like a dog with attitude.
I just found out what a Vorsteh is.
Its a German Wire haired Pointer.
Never owned a wire haired but owned 2 shorthairs that I bought of Ron Slater,Slatmart Kennels in Geelong in the early 70's.
I took them both into the Kimberley, great dogs.Tough and fearless.
I believe someone has a monopoly on the wirehairs in Aust and wont sell them unless steralised.

A member of another forum I'm on offered to give me a Jagd Terrier pup when his bitch gives birth, it would be to much stuffing around importing it though from the states. I enquired about the breed as I think they would make a top wallaby dog, I've had a Fox Terrier in the past and she was fantastic.

They are in Australia now, advertised recently in a hunting mag. Octobers issue of the Shooters Journal I think.

I believe there is a breeder in Queensland now for Jagtterriers.

I will be getting a new GSP pup first though. My GSP "Siegfried" is unfortunately dying with a tumour in his spine. He is still getting around on two legs, he stands up and drags his rear 'feet' which I have bandaged to stop them abrading. But probably won't make the end of the year, if he gets to bad, I will have to do something for him. In the meantime I am trying to spoil him with things he was never allowed to eat before or much of.

Nitro:
Sorry to read about your faithful friend Siegfried (great name!), I hope he goes with as little suffering as possible.

I bet he's loving the treats he couldnt get enough of before.

We will be buying a GSP in the late spring and the kids are looking terribly forward to having a mutt to play with. I am hoping he's a good hunter with good natural instincts as he will first be a pet and then a hunting companion.

Still around but the day is not far off, maybe tommorrow. He has trouble getting up now, so needs to make a trip very soon. Sad for such a young previously active dog.

My old stag was dropped into the ground just recently,a sad loss of an old girl (14) that took me to some fantastic times in the bush.Always sad when a trusted and true companion has to go.

Gryphon,

I'm very sorry to hear that. One of the hardest things in life for a dog lover is to loose his/her trusted 4 legged friend.

John,

I'm sorry that it is now unavoidable.

Gryphon,

Sad to hear of your girl going recently. A sad loss when one's mate passes on.

Hopefully you are looking for a new stag hound or another dog.

So how does one train a Jagd Terrier?

Anyone know of any good hunting terrier training manuals?

For GSP's the best training manual I have found is the so called "Green Book". The training manual of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. I wish I had had it from the beginning of trying to train my GSP.

Next time I will have it from the start.

But I have no idea other than basic obedience training in how to train a terrier used to hunt foxes and other small game, but also game up to the size of pigs!
