video of Moufflon hunting
      #117787 - 28/10/08 06:07 PM

every year we used to hunt one week in Gap in the French Alps for moufflon, chamois and sometimes stags or roe.
For 2 years I didn't join them. In fact my wife is dead against my going hunting the same place again and again. She pretends that's only to drink our heads off.
......but she let me go to any other places.
This year my partners shot 12 moufflons, 3 chamois and a red doe. The 6 of them drank 58 bottles of wines, 6 champagnes and 40l of beer, plus some meals in restaurants.
Here is the video of their hunt.
Notice that many shots occurred at 300-400m.

Dear Chasseur

I feel sorry for the poor quality of the video. If fact they (Dombray brothers) filmed most of the opportunities (with 100x magnification) with minor moufflons and perhaps don't cut off the boring sequences but it gives you the savor of the hunt with plenty of dull time climbing the mountains and game tricking them for few moments of real intensity.
Thanks for Your kind words. You are a connoisseur of hunting in France but I am not sure that You know how hunting is practised in the Alpes. If You're interested, I am planning a hunt there next year with Erik and possibly other guys interested in this hunt.
Feel free to check if You can join. The main problem being that it's so early (mid october) in the season that I can't offer to continue with a driven hunt on our territory in Eastern France as our first hunt happens in the end of November.
Good luck

notice that the moufflon aren't shot beyond 300m or it's against the law.

Does that mean that shots over 300 meters are allowed on chamois? Why is that? I would have thought that it would have been the opposite, since chamois are smaller?

What are the most common calibers used in France for moufflon hunting? 7x64, 7mm Rem mag, and 300win mag?

Hi Erik

Seems like you are "turning the knife in the wound".
Legally, it's illegal to shoot beyond 300m. Officially in Gap, a state owned territory, you have to approach game under 300m to be allowed to shoot. As far as you don't bring a rangefinder along, the PH cannot accurately tell whether you're bending the rules or not .
The bottom line being that chamois aren't as smart as moufflon, add that the chamois is left safe for a couple of years until it grows appealling horns, most of the chamois are almost acting like pets, especially the old males which have seen umpteenth hunters letting them on their own unscathed. The very day it's fate is sealed, he often stares at you, letting you come close enough (100-200m) as he grew without being molested years after years during about 10 years.
Not so with moufflon which are more numerous and are culled on a regular basis. It results that the largest males are really smart and can detect a hunter from very far......6 km is a cinch for an old sheep.
You'll see next year if you dare to compete with us???

Opps. Not my intention at all. I was just a little confused.

I'm planning on flying down to stay in Gap in a tent starting in June, just to get acclimatized to the high alp altitudes. By the time you join me in October, I'll have integrated myself into the moufflon herd.

Ps. What about the calibers I mentioned? Which are most commonly used? Or are others more popular for moufflon and chamois?

Pps. check your e-mail.

The most used calibres in France are 300 WM, 7*64 and 9.3*62.

The guides in Gap can’t forbid any calibres but are pleased with 300WinM and 7RM, and 270WM now.
The 6*62 Freres is a specialist calibre and accepted too.

The 9.3s are a no-no, not flat enough trajectory.
The 7*64 is admitted but is the bottom line.
The 243 isn’t bad but the hunter has to take care about the placement.
Lower calibres are critical especially by windy conditions.

Anyhow most of the hunters use either 300WinM or 7RM…………legally under 300m.
