What are your thoughts on the Webley MK VI in .45 caliber?

Webly MK VI? Hmm, let me think. OK, 2 seconds past. GREAT! Love them. 6 inch barrel, 265 gr of lead pushing 700 fps! Ever read Churchill? Have you read about Rourke's Rift? The Martini-Henry gets most of the coverage, but the officers had Webleys (or their own purchase) in .476 ( very close to the .455).
The US Sam Colt in .44-40 and .45 Colt had similar ballistics. The Webley had the heft, double action, sinble action and ejected quickly for a fast reload. There was also a crafted "speed loader" available for those with enough savey to get them and use them.
The accuracy of good ammo fitted to the revolver was very good. I don't have a MK VI, but do have a MK I and MKIV. Both converted to .45 ACP or Auto Rim. I load for the same ballistics as the .455 or .476.

If it is in good shape, .455 or .45 auto rim, you can't really go wrong.

...and BTW 88Mau, I share your sentiments on the big Webley but not your errant timeline...! Maybe an early Webley-built revolver or two of some pattern warmed their barrels at Rorke's Drift, but the Mk.VI was not adopted for military service until 24th May 1915!!

In fact, the Webley military-pattern revolver was first adopted on 8 November 1887 as the "Pistol, Webley, Mk I" (almost 8 years after the battle at Rorke's Drift!)

Yeah the Beaumont-Adams was still official service revolver in 1879, though officers might have privately purchased Webleys - the earlier solid-frame type. FWIW Custer had a pair of RIC Webleys at Little Big Horn.

I do like the later break action Webleys too. Nicely made and feel good in the hand, and the .455 certainly was well proven as a stopper, particularly with some of the bullet designs the Poms developed before the Hague Convention.

Regarding the bullet designs, does anyone have any pictures of the hollowpoint that was developed for the .455? I've always been curious about that.

I agree with the time line. I liked the Movie, Zulu, and was more thinking of this and the action. A little re-write of history to make a point. Yes, the personally purchased Revolvers, as stated in My post, were a significant part. Large frame and large caliber. And some older versions predating the classic Webley. Romantic history at it's best.
Mine are early Mk I and Mk III's. 1888 and (I think) 1914. The dates of use don't change the fighting and rugged qualities of a full size Webley type revolver. A well proven fighting weapon.

I've got a 'Manstopper' cartridge or two in my collection somewhere, I'll snap a photo when I can. Meanwhile, there are plenty of published pics so I'm sure someone will accommodate meantime.

They are indeed the mother of all hollow-points!!

One of the great military revolvers. Had a 4" Mk VI and did shoot a few animals with it. Also had a genuine 22 Long Rifle rimfire adapter kit for it. A 22RF drop in replacement cylinder and a 6" barrel that locked into the 455 cal barrel. The 22LR barrel protruded on my 4" MkVI but a short spacer made up the difference (looked a bit like a silencer. The 22 RF set up shot well, extracted and ejected just like the 455 cal.

Funny you should mention this, eagle27. I recently negotiated a deal on one of those things but haven't taken delivery yet.

One of our Arms Collectors Club members has one too, and submitted a short article to our quarterly newsletter a while back. Read it here.

Also found a nice Mk.I in .455 to add to the collection but yet to receive that one too.

I had a bit of fun with my 22 insert but as I reloaded for the 455 using shortened 45 Long Colt cases with the rims turned a bit thinner, I preferred shooting the large calibre more and it was cheap loading with 250gr cast bullets and a bit of Unique powder. Cases lasted for ever so only needed a 100 turned up on the lathe. Sold off the 22 insert to a guy with a 6" barreled Webley after I had played around with it for a while.

I like your website - shot buffs on the Finnis River Station back in '78 with my 404 Jeffery - out with a pet meat shooter for a week so got to bowl a few over including a reasonable bull or two. Used a mix of Kynoch SP, Parker Hale FMJ and my own RWS FMJ reloads. Can't fault the 404J on the big boys.

Great addition to this post. Sort of looks like the old upside down .38 full wadcutter approach.
nasty expansion. I imagine velocity wasn't much of an issue here. Likely, in .455, to deliver more felt impact at these 700 fps velocities than modern rounds at higher!
I use 255gr flat nose swaged lead in mine. I am more into hitting something like a large boar as an outside chance target.

Love all the Webley Marks. The Webley breaktop is a terrific revolver. I finally got mine (Mk VI) as a 40th birthday gift (02/03/08). I had only wanted a Webley since I was twelve and watched Zulu with Michael Caine and Stanley Baker. It took twenty-eight years but I finally got one.

Terrific design.
