What do you think?
      #118184 - 03/11/08 05:26 AM

Hello all, this is my first post here, so I hope I did it right. Anyway, I am considering a rifle design using a Martini action, and I have a number of possible calibers in mind. My question is this: what is the longest cartridge that you would want to use in a Martini action?

In a martini? That cartridge could be as long as you ever could find.
But i would stay at the lover pressures if its not fitted with the strengthen breech block.

That depends on the Martini. I've long pined for a Martini Cadet in 6.5/30-30, or maybe even 30-30. I believe no longer cartridge will fit.

I am going to use a large frame martini, not a cadet .

What's the overall length of the round?

Your question seems a lot like a similair question posted on another board recently.

Why is length important?

If the round is too long, then it will be akward to use in a Martini action.

Well, yes, but length is not the only factor. The cartridge has to "turn the corner" to get into the chamber, and while length is one factor, so is the chamber-mouth diameter relative to the cartridge neck or seated-bullet diameter. The .577/.450 slips in easily because the relatively slim neck has plenty of lateral movement in the wide chamber-mouth.

An extreme bottle-neck case can be much longer than a slim straight-wall case, and still fit.

Clear as mud?

303 British is an excellent choice, there is hardly any drop in the kill ranges, and speed is excellent as well.

I second the .303 for a martini.

I occasionally handle and shoot a very nice Francotte Martini built around the .303 and it's a honey.
Slender, light, pointy -- with the express sights it's like holding a laser pointer, and it's also set up with QD scope mounts (although I've never shot it with a scope) for longer-distance shooting.
It likes the long bullets best, and with that combination it's perfect for almost anything.

Great ideas. Look at .405 Win. or .375 2 1/2 flanged.
I was told by another member from Canada that a No.1 MK III barrel will fit up to the large MH actions. He posted one with the barrel installed, with the SMLE Sights! Looked like a neat rig.

I converted to the .375 in a shot out .303 MH carbine. Rim and head are the same as the .303 or even the .30-40 Krag.

I have seen several MH sporter made up in .500 BP Express. these will make that loading angle easier than the .577 cases.

Member here (Afro408) looked into this, and went with .450/400 2 3/8" (Yes, that exists).

Want to see some impressive ballistics for the .303 - with 150gr. & VN133 powder? Check Richard Lee's #2 manual. 200fps higher than the other loads listed. Over 2,900fps.

Sounds amazing Daryl, what is he getting the real bullets to 180gr-215gr & in what, if it is a P14 Mauser type that makes sense ?

I think you could get the full 450/400 3in case to fit, just depends how hot you load it I would say .

These are loads listed for the normal run of the mill .303 Brit. & are listed with all the other loads running 42,000 to 50,000psi. vN133 just seems to work wonderfully with the 150gr. bullets and isn't listed with the heavier bullets.

The CIP max pressure for the .303 is 53,000PSI.
The 180's have one load just above 2,500fps, the rest in the 2,400fps to 2,500fps range.

Am also looking at a future project using a large frame MH action.
Was considering 405W as the cartridge but not certain on the barrel profile or length.

I think the 405 Winchester will fit. Make a barrel stub and try it. There is no other simple way to find out.
