African 9.3x62 with Krupp barrel.

Whilst visitng friends in Zim I met a retired P/H with an early model 9.3x62, possibly 100 years old.

It was a small ring mauser 98 with an original octagonal 29" barrel made by Krupp. The bore was pitted from corrosive primers but the owner assured me it still shot accurately.

It originally had an aperture sight fitted to the cocking piece making a long sight radius. Stock was original though repaired. Engraving on the barrel indicated that it was made for an inhabitant of Cape Town.

I was unable to take any pictures. Has anyone come across one of these before ?

In 9.3x62 with a 29" barrel, it certainly sounds like an "African" style rifle made around the turn of the century. Probably a Suhl guild maker such as Simpson with a Krupp marked barrel. Could you ask if there are any other markings? Photos would be nice.

the germans really liked those long barrels, there is a gun like your on simpsons ltd. site i think in 8x60 and as don said they are reffered to as "african stlye" at least by the mauser oberndorf co. that is not to say that yours is an original oberndorf, many different companies built them. i have a 28" barrel 11.2x60 schuler with full express sights. many were built in 9.3x62......paul

Not trying to hijack this thread but she sounds similar to the Mauser I have here. I am not a fan of Mausers but this rifle balances and handles superbly. Caliber is 9.3 x 62, unfortunately no scope, I think if she had the scope I would be tempted to take her back to Africa for Plains Game, despite been a lefty, if only this old girl could talk, I bet we could listen to her tales for days.

I see it has claw bases. You could have a scope mounted on there in proper claw mounts in a jiffy.

New England Custom Gun (bestguns@comcast.net) fitted rings to the claw mount bases on my Greifelt drilling with a turnaround time of about six weeks. The drilling (16/65-16/65-7X57R) turned in MOA groups with my handloads yesterday, using the Vari-X III 1.5-5X Leupold I had mounted on it. I can hardly wait 'til deer season opens (November 11).

Nice 9.3 John, I once had one very similar exept it had an octagonal barrel with a full integral rib and a Rigby style peep sight on the bolt tail. I sold it for some forgotten reason, more fool me 'eh?

That is an interesting cutting/ventilating tool underneath that rifle too, does it have a name and a story?

The spear is Zulu, one of the best in my collection. Huge and heavy bladed, the spear not only has two fine sections of intricately woven brass wire, but the haft is also made from red ivory wood which indicates this spear was only used by a very senior Zulu warrior, probably an induna of one of the 'amabutho' or Zulu regiments.

This very fine spear measures 40 inches long and is very heavy. The huge broad blade is 17 inches by over 2 inches and certainly dates back to before the 1879 Zulu war. It may well be one of the famed broad-bladed stabbers introduced by Shaka in the early 1800s, with excellent pitting and retaining all the original patina, it is a magnificent example of Zulu metalwork.

The blade is bound to the short stocky haft by brass wirework of the finest quality, below which the red ivory wooden haft glows and gleams and is silky smooth. The base of the haft tapers outwards and again is bound with fine quality brass wirework.

Acquired in 2001 from the Malakatha Mountain just 10 kms south of the Isandlwana battlefield where King Cetewayo's main Zulu army wiped out the British camp in January of 1879.

Alex, your old rifle sounds exactly like the one I saw in Zim. Small World. Was it a small ring action ?

Really neat gun.

Looks like the bolt was mod'd for the scope and maybe {??} stock cut down and the fore end tip added?

I like these sort of guns in general. The mint guns "factory original" are really nice from an "historical" standpoint, but the modified users are the ones that really grab my attention. My most fond users are all cobbled on in some way. Makes them reflect the owner I guess.

The wood has NOT been touches the stock is original.
The rifle had a black Pechmeyer pad on it when I bought it

A Silvers pad was then put on to make the rifle look make 1909ish.
This is a picture of the rifle with the black pad, next to it is the smaller brother Mauser model M from 1914! Cal. 8x57J The longest and shortest mausers made
