Have had the opportunity to shoot one of the NEW winchesters...in 300 Win Mag...surprised to see the overall fit looked really good --especially compared to what they were putting out the last year or 3.. 
The barrel was freefloated...trigger was actually pretty good and the gun was shooting under 1 1/2" --this was only the one load I tried..."was not my gun"...just lucky enough to be at the range when this guy showed up...it was their featherweight model..
Interestingly enough--the stamp on the barrel has Morgan, Utah on it and NOT the plant in S Carolina..not really sure what is going on there..was told one of two possibilities..barrels are coming from there or the new plant is not up and running yet..not sure on the validity of these statements --just what I heard..
Also the models have "limited edition 2008" on the floorplates...which, again, allegedly..will only be for the first few runs...
Will advise when I find out more...

That is odd. The new FN M70s are mostly out-sourced, but they are supposed to be making the barrels in-house. Even the actions are made by a nearby vendor in SC. The trigger is new BTW, and I personally like the old M70 trigger.

I thought so as well--doesn't make much sense --but plan to keep checking..
Agree with the trigger info..picked up a pre-64 in 300 H&H a few weeks back--checked the serial number--actually come off the line in 1954--trigger is truly awesome and amazingly simple to work on..

Would like to hear their reasons for changing the trigger,and this one is probably ok, however why screw with something that works so well, seems to me they have pulled some boners before. Pre '64 Model 70 in 300 H&H, my favorite classic rifle in my favorite classic cartridge, only problem is I can't get mine on a 390+ bull, guess I'll keep trying.

Well you still have this year to scout for that bull--unfortunatly, think a lot of the 390 bulls have provided protein to the overbulging wolf population--at least that is what I am seeing/hearing here in Montana with the areas lying next to Yellowstone...
As to the trigger---call my synical, but my thought would be easier and less costly production...have not had the opportunity to take one apart for review---but agree--wished they would not have messed with it...plan to snag one in 300 Win in the not too distant future..if/when that happens will let you know...

The new trigger is a modular design, like the Remington M700. They buy it, slap it on with two screws, and it's done. No need for skilled craftsmen to assemble and adjust parts. They claim it's better because it's sealed and no trash can get in. Actually, I liked the idea that in the old design trash could get out.

If they have put a Rem/Timney/Generic trigger on the M70 it's abomination.
That simple M70 trigger could not be improved.
Nothing is immune from being frigged. The M70 becomes the M700!

Does anyone know if the "new" Model 70's (which I assume are controlled feed) have a bolt the same as the pre-64 Model 70's?
I ask, only because I came into possesion of a minty Model 54 .30-06, but the bolt had been lost(?). From what I have read a pre-64 bolt could be modified (safety and bolt handle) to fit. I'd really like to get this old girl up and running...

A first model with the engrave3d plate should make a decent investment.
It will depend on how many were made and how long you live of course.

I am a real fan of Mod 70`s and only yesterday i picked up my near on 30 year old Win 70 with its new s/less barrel,this should do me for just as many years.
If i do buy a brand new rifle it will be a new Mod 70,so dont get me wrong when i say that something as small as the floor plate release button in the last pic could have at least been made square to the floor plate itself....small things like that hopefully dont point to other build annoyances!

Thanks gryphon, I had not noticed. I had a closer look at the release button and found that even the horizontal slope on the button is from the left going down to the right. Is it deliberate ??? as it is more comfortable to operate like this with the forefinger of the right hand? Will it be reversed on a left hand action.
Can anyone who has one of the newer Win 70's look and confirm if this is true?
I had a look at the release button on my below pictured pre-64 M70 and the button does not have the above said slope/slant.

That's not a flaw, that moves(spins) left to right. It's on a spring, all good.
The one thing I'm not a fan of on the new & Classic Model 70's is the two piece bolt design. The Pre-64 handle & bolt where one-piece, not so with the Classic & new M70. But saying that it's still a very strong system(crush fitted & soldered) & I would buy one in a heart beat!

My old mod 70 carries three 7mm mags underneath,plenty!
Never ever had it open unexpectedly either and its done a lot of bush work through the thick shit!

You should be able to without any trouble. I had Bob make up a new box for my Mod 70 so it will take 4 + 1. It works great with .257 Weatherby Mag, 7mm Rem Mag and .338 Win Mag. It's a switch barrel rifle.

I can get four in her no probs at all,just dropped her in today to be bedded for the next 30 deer seasons (sambar)
She`s laying on Mrs meat in this pic and as you can see by the blue or lack of it on the floor plate and elsewhere she has been carried "hands on" for a long time.
The new stainless barrel will be taped also.
The smith asked if i wanted it reblued..." nah mate she`s a hunting rifle and all it has to do is shoot,she dosent have to look all new and shiny"

No 340W it started life as an XTR fresh from Frank O`Reillys in Melb for $320 with two packers of crackers and a long time ago which the price reflects of course.
Some of the toys used chronologically below.
12x Leupold
4x wide angle Bushnell
2x7 Leupold
3.5-10x44 Zeiss
timber original stock that i cashed for $150 (spewing)followed
A hand built fibreglass stock which possibly was the first FG stocked rifle to take a trophy stag in Aus in the early `80`s
Bell + Carlson stock around 19 years ago
another B+C a few months ago
New Mab barrel only picked up last week!
Yes she is a old warrior too and is one of those firearms that is almost part of ones self when out hunting,might not look pretty but well and often used firearms dont after a life time in the bush no matter how hard one tries to look after them they inevitably cop their fair share of hard work especially in the high country hunting for sambar.
note the internal sling mounts and super sling which came with the original B+C,I hated the look of it when it arrived but it has worked like a dream for all those years.
The other two deer rifles are easy to leave in the safe as I reach for her.

The “Winchester Legends” program on Versus channel did a full show on the new M70 and the FNH’ Columbus, SC factory recently.
The “Winchester” area within the main Columbus’ FNH facility is fairly small which required major parts except barrels to be manufactured elsewhere. However, the FNH representative stated that all of the outsourcing facilities for the M70 are FNH’ company owned plants except for rifle stock outsourcing – though I seem to recollect that final stock preparation and fitting are performed at the FN.
The show didn’t address why the M70 are being marketed via BALCO and showing a Utah address rather than the Columbus, SC factory address.

does it really matter where a product is made? As long as it is a good and reliable product is what counts to me.

Hi John
Yes mate I meant Bob deVries. The switch barrel set up is nothing elaborate. I have the 3 barrels, and an action wrench/barrel vise setup. Not a quick change system at all. I usually leave a barrel in for a season or 2 then change barrels just for something different and use it for a season or 2 etc. I need to re sight the scope in each change.
