my new .577 NE
      #110474 - 26/07/08 09:44 PM

Hi guys, I managed to pick up my ruger number 1 in .577 NE yesterday, and shot it for the first time today. The rifle was originaly a .375 H&H, so I had my 'smith fit a minimaly contured Walther barrel which measures 1 inch at the muzzle and is 26 inches long. I also had two recoil reducers added to ballance the long heavy barrel and also to add some much needed weight to tame the recoil. I also had the gunsmith fit a custom made set of iron sights and a sling swivel mounted on the barrel, as well as make a custom set of stock bolts to add some more weight. All up the rifle weighs in a 12 lbs 7 oz, a fraction under the 13 lbs I wanted.

I was having a hard time finding some loading data for the 650 grain bullets I want to use but managed to find one load that used an IMR powder which are hard to get here, so I subsituted it for 135 grains of ADI 2213sc which was a fraction slower according to my powder burn chart, and hence I added an extre 5 grains od powder over the load I found. Having been constantly told how stupid I was for building a .577 on a ruger number 1 and that the recoil would be massive, I was a little nervous for the first shot. I am however happy to report that the recoil is actualy very mild and feels less than my .416 Rigby shooting 410 grain bullets at 2700 fps.

I am booked in for a buff hunt soon so I'll be taking it along for the ride to see how it goes against a water buff in the top end of Australia.

Steve

Hi Tim, I know of a bloke up there who knows some properties that I'll be able to get on, so I'll be hunting with just me and my brother( he'll be using my CZ .416 rigby with 400 grain Barnes TSX 2650 fps). I didnt much like some of the guides I met at the woodonga deer hunters show, just plain dissmisive of a 24 year old who wants to shoot buff, so I thought stuff it I'll organise it myself which is pretty much what I have done.

I have an idear I'll be hunting around the Daly river area, seems to be where he was roughly talking, but he may have some other places lined up for my brother and me elsewhere. I'm not even looking for the worlds biggest head or anything like that, just something representive, as I've never really been into trophies much.

Cheers

Steve

Aussiesteve. Good on you for going with what you wanted. Putting one of those 577 slugs in the right place should put them on the ground pretty quick. I had a Ruger #1 in 458 tropical rechambered for 450 3 1/4 express and I was told the recoil will be to much. It was quite managable. I was talked in to selling much to my discust. I have just bought a 450-400 Ruger #1. Haven't shot it yet, but certainly looking forward to it. Good luck with your hunt, and I agree that you do not have to shoot record heads or be a trophy hunter to enjoy your hunting. Let us know how you go.

Thanks guys, it does feel good when you do somthing that you want to do, even though it is not the norm and it works out. I will try and post some pics later on today, the only thing is the beat up stock but it has a hint of figure under the factory finish so perhaps a nice hand rubbed oil finish is in order.

I may very well get howled at but....

My buff rifle is nothing too special to look at. I would prefer to have a fully functioning rifle than the most elegant rifle in the world that could not extract a round and had a heavy trigger with overtravel.

I have not hunted much at all down the Daly way but I have heard reports of huge pigs and some buff down there. You should have a blast!!!

Catch you soon,

Tim

Here's a link to a thread that explains how to post photos. It really isn't hard. I can do it!
