8 guage ammo?

My cat was chasing a lizard und my bed and my wife sent me to the rescue. I didn't find the lizard, but sitting in a box stored under my bed, I saw this old shell that I forgot I had. Is this a shotgun shell or an old 8 gauge bore gun casing? It is headstamped Winchester No.8.

some of those were used to blast slag in foundry operations. cool...

One from my collection.

Case is a fraction over 3", overal length is 3.84"
Comparison round is Elley 12gauge 2-3/4" roll crimp buckshot (2-15" closed)

Headstamp sugests Australian manufacture

Projectile is solid, blunt and made of hardish metal (not magnetic but certainly not lead - Possibly some type of zinc alloy?)

Note that the projectile is not centred, and is considerably undersized for an 8 gauge. Exposed section measures about .654" (8 bore lists at .835") All those I have are slightly loose and wobbly.

Looking down past the crimp it appears the projectile has a shoulder below the roll crimp that is closer to bore diameter.

These were used to break up slag or clinker inside opperating furnaces by firing through the inspection hatches or feed doors (EXCITING I would think)

Finally got pictures on as well. Now just need to get smilies right and I will be happy.

Thanks for that Marrakai, my second attempt failed also. Might have to get a degree in picture posting sometime, or I could end up goi ng crazy.

In your second attempt, you may have used the wrong codes, as the direct link URL needs to end with the image name ie /file.jpg in order to work correctly, as I understand it.

Once you get it sorted, its like riding a bicycle....

I am currentley doing a 2 week shutdown at Cement Australia.They have a new Winchester ring gun.They buy 50,000 rounds at a time.The chief engineer knows I shoot big calibre guns,he said I can have all the emptys.

I'm fairly sure those slugs are zinc.

blackpowder blanks in 8 bore industrial

lathe turned 8 bore ind. brass cases

and the 8 bore ind. with a 8 bore

Sleeve insert allows you to shoot 10 gauge blanks

and here is the 8 bore gun

Our largest swivel gun! "2 Pounder"

36 inches long, weighs 210 lbs, comes with a yoke mount. (yoke weighs 34 lbs)

1.75 inch bore (Golf ball size)
Cartridge version will fire 4, 8 or 10 gauge blanks!
Comes with adapter to fire 10 gauge blanks.

What size shot would you recomend for duck?

this is more the french/italien style, they use swifel guns but with much longer barrels

may work on a different game:
