Spiffing, old chap! Thanks Squarebridge - very informative. Somehow the British double has evolved into something analogous with the samurai sword, to remain unchanged for centuries. Even if someone thinks of a better idea, it won't be cricket to use it.

I think that's an excellent analogy in almost every way. Not only is it a certain thing, but it must be made in a certain way. There is no "better or worse", there is only what it is, and nothing else. I don't have a word for that quality, but oddly enough I'm sure the Japanese do.
