Gentlemen,

Thank you for the thoughtful responses regarding the .303. I will post photos with data upon completion of the rifle, which is expected in Spring 2009.

Hi !
I been used to reload for my friend who has two double rifles ( side-plate), 1 Fraser and 1 Holland and Holland .
I 've choise the Sierra 180 Gr Spitzer # 2310 .
My friend has killed many many wild boar and some roe- deer . He never got any trouble .

Welcome to the forum Hussey500.
What part of Texas are you from? Who is building your rifle?
As you are aware of the main problem in building and regulating a double is once you decide on a load and regulate your rifle with that load, that is pretty much it. You can’t just change the sights to get it to shoot a different load or bullet weight.
I would recommend a 180 grain load as being best for what you said you intended to use it fore.
Are you going to scope it?

Friend of mine had me chamber a new .308" barrel for his P-17 US Mauser(.303). His thinking was that he cannot buy 215gr. bullets here for a reasonable price and the 220gr.RN .308" Hornady's worked well on moose and deer in the odd .303 he owns. he wanted a new, exceptionally accurate .303 that would shoot factory .303's with 180gr.WW Power Points as well as the 220gr. Hornady's, hense the .308" barrrel. We ground the pilot to fit a .308" bore, then chambered his .308 barrel for this round. Firing .303 factory rounds will not increase pressure( in this action, wouldn't matter if it did) as the neck is the proper size for the .312" bullet in the case. Also, the bullet will be several to 8" down the tube before max pressure is reached by the charge, and by then, it's the correct size, isn't it.

So- my premise is that anything over 200gr. will work and if you can't get 215 Woodleighs, try the 220gr. Hornady's. If they don't shoot, put a new barrel on it. If you can get the 215gr. Woodleighs, be happy. BTW - 180gr. Power Points have also worked well on moose and elk and shot well in almost all of my friend's .303's - he has had several hundred - really.

I owned a Westley Richards droplock in 303. it was the best shooting double rifle i ever owned. when i shot it at the drss shoot & hunt in Texas last year comments were made that i was the only one who put the bullets in the center of the bull !

you can tinker with all your theories and try many experiments and basically you are shovelling shit against the tide ! wake up and accept reality.

just use the standard 215 grain round nose and you will never have a better shooting rifle. plus you can buy replacement ammo if yours go astray while travelling.

don't try to make the good old 303 something it isn't. just learn how to use it and it will never let you down. from stags in the highlands and stalking fallow deer in wales, roe deer and boar in europe plus plains game in africa you couldn't ask for a better all around cartridge in its class.
mine was there, did what i needed and did it well. you can experiment for years or just enjoy a great cartridge as it is !

Oh yeah, that 215 "standard" simply abounds...

From the feed store in Wartburg, Natal to the Conoco Gas Station in Deary, Idaho, nothing is more common...

Seriously, just where have you seen a box of recently-loaded 215 grain ammo?

I'd love to find the abundant source for factory loaded 215gr SNRN ammunition for the .303 british

Got my buddies .303 P14 fininshed (.308" groove diameter). He'll be loading up his new brass with IMR4320 and 220gr. Hornady .308" RN's and we'll test this weekend. The chamber has minus .003" shoulder headspace on new Federal brass. Bolt drop is easy as the brass moves this .003" without protest. Reason I chambered it this way was to prevent any stretch at the web upon initial firing.

The factory reamer, which is ground for headspacing on the rim, cuts a chamber with at least .020" headspace on the shoulder. No wonder .303" brass is known to separate in just a couple loadings. Keith's bras should last 20 to 30 - maybe more, depending on how he loads it.

So - due to the shortage of good 215gr. bullets for the .303 here, buddy keith now has a rifle that shoots factory .303 perfectly yet also handles .308" 220gr. RNs - it was made for them.
