"Shooting the British Double Rifle" Available NOW!
      #115766 - 28/09/08 10:09 PM

I need to find somewhere in the U.S. where I can order a copy of "Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright. I work in Saudi Arabia but will be going home to Texas for my annual repatriation leave in December. I'd like to order this book so it will be waiting on me when I get there.

If you know where this book is available today, please tell me who I can order it from. If you post a URL I may or may not be able to access it as the Saudi's try to block all gun related sites from all servers in the Kingdom. So it you give a URL, please also give the business' phone number in case the URL is blocked and I have to order by phone.

Brazos Jack

The next edition is due for release at the end of the year. Stay tuned, I will be getting some in for Nitro Express members.

You might if lucky find a second edition somewhere. Mentioned many times on NE.com, do a search on "Shooting the British Double".

I would rather get the new edition, but my repatriation leave to the U.S. will end about newyear and I'll be back in Saudi for many months.

So if I could find a current 2nd edition for original new price or not much more (I think new price was about $40 USD) I would go ahead and buy it and have it shipped to my Texas address.

Then if the new edition is available in December, I would get that also and leave the 2nd edition in storage in Texas. But if the new editon is delayed, as is usually the case, I still have the 2nd edition to read until my 2009 repat leave (probably in July).

Try these Kiwis. They still have it listed on their website:

PS Tell them I told you about it too.

NitroX,

I may give them a call.

Surprisingly, their site is not blocked here. I hope they don't upgrade their blocking software until after I retire.

However, the company logo no longer functions on the site and the page you list was last updated on Oct. 29, 2002 - almost 6 years ago. So its a long shot at best.

Anyone know any other possible sources?

O.K., I guess I’ll wait on the new edition. Even if it’s not available in time for this repat.

So I need a back up substitute to order and read in case it’s late.

I just read Terry Weiland’s “Dangerous Game Rifles” and years ago read Taylor’s “African Rifles and Cartridges”.

If I can only make room for one right now, which should it be? Boddington’s “Safari Rifles”? Woods’ “Rifles for Africa”? Other suggestions?

Rifles for africa IMHO - but it doesn't offer the same type of info as Wright. With Taylor, Woods and Wieland, you've got it covered. Add Wright for double specific info, but not which rifle/calibre is most appropriate.

I have been advised the release date is more likely to be around March.

Maybe taking a while, but it will be worth it.

NitroX,

Please put me down for one.
Once these books go out of
print, you end up having to
pay collector prices.

Brazos Jack,

If you are still following this
thread, I have had Taylor’s “African
Rifles and Cartridges” for decades and
still enjoy it. I just finished Weiland’s
“Dangerous Game Rifles” and just started
Boddington’s “Safari Rifles II".

I had Taylor's "Big Game and Big Game
Rifles" on order with Amazon for about
a year and they canceled the order,
saying the publisher never delivered.

Safari Rifles II is an updated and
expanded Safari Rifles. They cost the
same from Safari Press. They clipped
the old price off the dust jacket flap
and put a sticker with a higher price
over the old one one the back of the
dust jacket. Mine is 594 pages and has
a 2009 copyright date. I got it earlier
this month.

When I have a price people will be able to pre-order and I will order enough for the ordered copies plus a quantity to have on hand.

Double D,

I appreciate the tip.
I have looked there, but Amazon
had it listed for pre-order at
under $30 with free shipping.
Those are collector prices to me.
The foreign prices aren't bad, but
when I add in the shipping, it is way
more than Amazon was going to charge.
Maybe a fresh run will come out at
a lower price. I'll keep trying.

"Shooting the British Double Rifle" 3rd Ed - available soon! [Re: tinker]
      #140496 - 13/08/09 04:57 AM

Hopefully the first order will be freighted to me on Friday.

I have made up a list of members indicating they want one.

An online order page will be set up allowing payment by PayPal or credit card through PayPal in the next few days. Including the price and postage costs. When this is available, a post will be made on this thread.

Unfortunately the copies will NOT BE SIGNED as Graeme indicated this was not be possible as all the books have been delivered to him pre-shrink wrapped.

I will post the chapters/contents listing as well.

For members whom have been waiting for sometime it will be possible to finally get the new (3rd) edition.

Just ordered my copy too, and now the wait commences. The town we're in is too small for home delivery so we have to go to the Post Office everyday anyway, expecting something neat to arrive always makes it better!

No I'm afraid not as I posted on an earlier post. The books were shipped to him boxed and packed so he wasn't going to open them to sign.

If you meet Graeme at a show or event, no doubt he would be willing to sign.

Not a problem, cheque or money order (in Australia $) works too.

PayPal allows payment by Visa or Mastercard without signing in as a member if not already a member. Otherwise if your card is already registered with them (ie as a member), log in and then pay either by Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal funds.

What's new in it?

DoubleD
In response to your question,

firstly an extra 108 pages the second edition has 180 pages this edition has 288 pages.

I will now quote from the Prologue of this book page 17.

"In this edition you will notice a lot more load data for full nitro double rifles . For this edition I have tried to shoot all the common cartridges and provide load information . The pressure test has once again been increased and each chapter revised to take account of the latest information available. The paradox chapter contrains some information on using the paradox in the hunting field ,both as a rifle and a shotgun."

I hope this helps

good shooting

2 weeks if by airmail and 12 if by boat.
Does anyone know by which NitroX mailed them?

Sorry, had not not been able to revisit this thread or the forums for the last couple of weeks. Hadn't noticed it before as it is better to PM or email enquiries usually where queries can be directly answered.

All the ordered books have been packaged up and sent out. Your copies will arrive in the next day to 2 weeks depending on your location.

Unfortunately I was delayed by two weeks due to certain matters in sending books out. Apologies for any inconvenience.

I entered the shipping information as a "tracking number" on PayPal, so every existing orderer should have received an email to confirm. The tracking number is an internal number for NE only and can not be tracked at the Aust Post website.

Basically all the books purchased into stock have been sold, which was a quite considerable number. Except for a small quantity reserved for a couple of persons enquiring about a shipping quotation.

NEW STOCKS will be ordered in, however these won't be able to be shipped until approx the 20th of Oct (as I will again away from home from the end of the month to approx mid-Oct).

The potential delay in shipping for NEW orders (from today) has been noted on the ORDERING page.

NEW ORDERS can still be made to reserve a copy. They do sell out fast.

I got an Paypal email notice too.
I couldn't get the Australian Post tracking system to tell me anything.
It says,"Please enter a 13 character consignment note number".
I should have looked here at the forum first.
From NitroX's post, he must have sent them airmail.
Hooray! Thanks NitroX.

A large quantity of the books arrived in the USA this week. I would expect they will be available from specialty retailers soon. Meanwhile, the books will be offered at the Holland & Holland booth next week during at the Vintagers World SxS Championships.

I wonder, is it polite practice for competitors to try to sell their goods in someone else's "shop"? Very bad manners I would think. Drop me a line as we welcome supporters at NE.

I subsidised the non-Aust and NZ postage so didn't really make anything out of those copies. Plus gave a few away. Long anticipated I hope the copies received prove useful.

Graeme's book is internationally popular.

Your efforts to get this book out in a group buy has also made you internationally popular also, John!

It's appreciated!

Let us know how much more postage we owe.. I assmue the pay-pal link will still work to make up the difference.
I'm sure that the others will also 'pony up' the costs.

No one owes anything, I covered costs plus a couple of dollars on all sales overseas. Difficult to supply a competitive price with direct sales using international postage for heavier items such as books.

I'm happy that everyone whom wanted a book was able to order one. Thanks for supporting NE.

All,

I got my book today. NitroX packed it
beautifully. He used bubble wrap and
a nice mailer. The book is in mint
condition. Oh, and what a book.
Tonight, I'm making a pot of first
flush Darjeeling and enjoying this.
Now, if only I could make some of
the rifles in the photos clone
themselves and come to live at
my house.

Syfilis?

Considering Karen Blixen, and now Peter, I guess Syphilis is a bit of a tradition amongst Danish hunters.

Woo-Hoo, mine arrived too! That's interesting how they're arriving at different countries approx. within the same time frame. People can knock "snail mail" all they want, but I still think it's really quite a feat.

Thank you John for putting this together, it's really appreciated.

The 3 we ordered showed up yesterday, thank you John.

Mine were a little banged up from shipping on the edges though. Would recommend boxes over padded envelopes in the future for international shipments.

John,

This is to thank you very much for the book which arrived today. The best thing is that it arrived just as winter sent its first calling card here in Northern Illinois. Now I can happily endure the Chicago winter indoors and enjoy reading it.

Thank you very much and very good hunting, my friend!

Was surprised at the size - about the same thickness as volume 1 and 2 together!

I received my book about 2 weeks ago, but some sickness in the family has kept me away from all things guns for a while. I finally got a chance to look at it and it is a great book. Maybe a little too technical for me, but good reading. Thank you for offering the book on the site.
