In the market for a DR
      #115748 - 28/09/08 05:06 PM

Hello all

As lots of folks do, I have dreamt and drooled over double rifles as long as I have been into shooting and firearms.

Well, I think I am one of the lucky ones. Come February/March next year, I will be in the market for one.

I don't know a whole bunch about the technical side of doubles and the only real parameters I have are:

* will be a big bore
* must be a quality rifle but no show pony, if I am going to outlay a bunch of dollars I want to be able to make noise and feel the rifle against my shoulder as well as have it aesthetically pleasing (if things go to plan, I will be hunting Cape Buffalo with it)
* I am not quite lucky or tinny enough to have an endless supply of hard earned, so I have a limit
* must be from a reliable source
* to avoid messy and costly paperwork, probably best if it is already in Australia

My questions of you are:

Where does one start looking?
Is there a good DR smith that's easily accessible and willing to give a rifle a roadworthy slip?
New or second hand?
The sixty four dollar question - what calibre? I thought stay simple and go .470

Thanks

A english double ejector in .470 is the most sought after working rifle, or a Heym is a good rifle followed by Merkel both of these come in .470 and .450/400.

I have been considering a Kreighoff in .470NE or .500NE myself. I also like the Heym. I am sort of leaning toward the .500NE. Maybe even .577. I have a bolt action .458 lott and the .500NE or .577 should give me an edge. I realize the .458 lott will do anything I need it to do and has proven itself thoroughly. I just want a double. Have an incurable case of elephant fever.

There don't seem to be many s/h double rifles for sale in Australia. Has the supply dried up or are they only advertised in select places?

Both Heym and Merkel are good rifles, but are in very different price ranges. Also the Merkel does not come chambered for the 450/400NE 3", but the Heym,Searcy, and Krieghoff does. I look for all the makes to start chambering their double rifles to 450/400NE 3" now that Hornady, and Norma have started loading factory ammo for that cartridge.

I personally know Chris Sells, owner of Heym America, and have shot several of the Heym shop rifles. My favorite of them all is the Heym 88B, or the PH chambered for 450/400NE 3" Jeff, set up with scope mounts so a scope can be attached when needed! That IMO, is a real all around double rifle. It will take care of the big stuff, and is usable on the deer trail as well. It is light enough to carry mile after mile on the track of an elephant, and is big enough to get the job done, but is a fine wild boar/deer/black bear/elk/moose rifle as well!
