CZ 550 375 H&H 100 yard groups
      #115484 - 25/09/08 01:35 PM

I was out at the range today and put 50 rounds through my CZ 375. Most were offhand, rapid fire 3 and 5 shot strings at 50 and 25 yards. I then shot 3 3-shot groups from the bench since I'm thinking of having my 375 rebored to 470 Capstick or rechambered to 375 Weatherby Magnum, both my gunsmith and Jim Dubell at Clearwater reboring said to make sure it's a shooter otherwise rebarrel rather than rebore it.

It was a bit windy and I'm used to more magnification (I have a 1.5 - 5x Leupold) when I'm shooting for groups and I'm still getting used to this whole hold it firmly thing from the bench ... So much for my excuses ...

The other two groups measured just over .700" center to center ...

I would reconsider reboring that one and maybe look for another one for that project. You have a shooter there!

Thanks bigmaxx, yeah I know, maybe just a rechamber to 375 Weatherby, 200 more fps and just a smidge more recoil. I've got a local gunsmith who specializes in bench rest guns / accuracy who has a 375 Weatherby reamer. I just want something I can't buy off the shelf ... Also getting 2550 fps with those 350g Woodleigh Protected Points would make an impressive brown bear and cape buffalo round. A 250g Swift A-Frame at a leisurely 3000 fps will make for a nice elk and mule deer load.

I have had some great shooting guns I have undone with my "modifications".

IMHO-For a 375 H&H that gun is a shooter--I wouldn't touch it. You may wish to get another rifle to play with--

My vote goes...

Keep it a .375 H&H Mag!

And very nice shooting by the way!

Totally agree--keep it what it is...the 375 H&H will do anything you need it to do and more...each to their own...but in the Africa circles I have visited with, most deplore weatherby cartridges...

I like them in the correct circumstances..and use a .257 Weatherby caliber on a titanium Remington action/Hart barrel, HS Precision stock..it is a tack driver and excellent for long range pronghorn or mule deer shots....but the velocity they produce are not needed in Africa nor in Alaska if used for Brown bear..IMHO....

Leave it alone and keep it or offer it for sale as it is.
There's nothing wrong with what you have there, and the round you're shooting is already an impressive round on brown bear and buffalo.

Consider having some engraving or wood finish work done to it.
Have .375 H&H Magnum inlaid in gold on the barrel!

Ok Ok Ok! But when I shoot that cape buffalo perfectly 3 times in 5 secs and he kills me because I didn't have my .80 caliber dino stomper you're all going to be sorry ...

Really thanks for the advice,

+++++++++++++

You shoot him 3 times perfectly in 5 seconds..the only thing that is going to be killed is the buff you just shot..

I don't know, now that you mention it. Maybe the .375 is too light for buffalo. I would sell that rifle and buy a much heavier caliber. What will you take for it....LOL.

I was thinking the same...
If this is the same gun you showed us on the mag mauser thread, I would keep it as-is. (or sell it to me - haha)
Looks and shoots as the full package!
Or, you could pick up another CZ in 500Jeff as a companion.

It would be a mistake to alter that fine rifle.

Buy another for your large caliber. Keep this one as is.

OK!! What ammo brand or reload was this that shoots .77 inch group with a .375 &H?
I like the 300 grain RN Hornady bullet. My FN .375 shoots well, but I want to have a reliable, accurate load at at least factory velocity (2500 fps) and 300 gr bullet. Mine is a standard lenght 98 action FN made commercial Mauser. (no thumb slot). It fits me well and when I go to Africa, it will go with me.
Suggestions of loads with either H 4350 or H 4831 powder in this range with good accuracy is my quest. Also, out of the box best performance factory load suggestions are very appreciated.

If you wish, PM me, I have some "pet" loads I have developed with RL-15 that shoot really well in my Sako 375 H&H..would be willing to share some info..no guarantees and please start lower in the grains..but they shoot really well..

I am sure others will have good loads as well..just a thought..

Cheers,

I would suggest you try Swift A-Frames too. They performed very, very well for me. I shot the 300 grain in my .375 ruger with superb results. I know there are other good bullets out there, but the Swift impressed the heck out of me on some tough animals at fairly long ranges. I used the H4831SC and RL-19 at near maximum loads.

I was shooting 250g Swift A-Frames at 2860 fps, using Rem brass, CCI 250 primers and IMR 4320 (1 grain below max in the Swift Manual) on the target I posted. The gun will shoot better than that, it's my inconsistent hold that's holding the gun back. My gun groups as well with 350g Woodleigh PPs at 2360 fps using H4350, 2 grains below max. It kicks a bit more with the 350g Woodleighs but it's still just a gentle caress.

Regards,
Chuck

88: I have several 3-shot bench groups shot at 200 yards that fall inside 1 one inch with my SAKO using 300 grain Hornady's and 4350 powder. It is hard to go wrong with 4350 powder and the .375 H&H.

Thanks bakerb! I just found out that all of the CZ 550 Safari Classics made in the CZ Custom shop in the U.S. (I ordered mine from the CZ Custom Shop and worked with Jason Morton who was great to work with!) have McGowen barrels.

Well I sent my rifle to Clearwater reboring and there's just not enough metal to rebore to what I wanted to (470 Capstick), so a 375 H&H it will stay unless I decide to rebarrel it to 500 Jeffery down to the road. Probably for the best ...

Chuck, you have a great rifle. It's been alot of fun following your project.

Have you hunted with it?

It never ceases to amaze me that in spite of the truly knowledgable, highly experienced PH's always recomending "heavy & slow" for dangerous game, there's always this belief in "the need for speed"

That gun is a classic case of the sage old advice:
