This old daggaboy was quite a bit of excitement! He took a frontal shot from the .458 lott and turned to run. A backup solid beside the tail was recovered from his throat. He was taken in Sapi with Professional Hunter Gary Fraser of Roger Whittall Safaris.
This old bull hippo was badly scarred and pushed from the pod. We crept in from the back of this island in the Zambezi and leopard crawled to within 20 yards. My PH, Gary Fraser told me to stand up and shoot him. When I stood up and looked through the scope all I saw was hippo. He went down to one shot and the insurance premium was paid via a side brain shot.
Here are a couple of pics of some plains game from Humani:
First impala taken at Sapi, one for the pot. Got two better ones later at Humani.

Not for sure on that bump. He had alot of dime sized ticks and the lions had been hold of him before. May have been from an old scape or something. Bottom line i reckon is I just dont know. Thanks, he was a blast.

Max-
Great time you had out there it seems! Great way to boost the self-seteem of your bolt gun too...
Did you build the rifle yourself?

Hey bigmaxx, great pics! You are very privileged to have hunted with Magara. He is absolutely top notch even though he speaks no English.

Yes you are quite right. He only knows a few words of english, but I think he may be psychic...LOL. He is truly a great tracker, and a licensed PH. I would have struggled to get a fraction of the game I got without Magara. His son is a fine tracker too. His name is Nmo. I truly enjoyed Magara's company even though we seldom expressed ourselves in words.

FYI, Magara has another son, Pearson, who is quite a good tracker and who has eagle's eyes. But Pearson, who I've hunted with, has some attitude problems apparently. None I saw though.
I would love to hunt with Magara someday.

Apparently Magara has a couple of wives, I am not surprised to hear he has other offspring. Nmo is quite pleasant. I enjoyed hunting with them very much. I told Magara when I came back we would get an elephant. He was pleased. I can't wait!

congratulations, very sexy bag.
I especially love your old dagga boy. Plenty of character with its worn off horns. Was the frontal shot that nicked his right horn?
You're a lucky boy to have the opportunity to approach a hippo when out of water. I think it helps a lot to recover it. IMO it's fair chase, I couldn't feel any pleasure with shooting a hippo when trapped in his pond. thanks for sharing

No, it had been done for a while apparently. So had the broken tip. Magara said he had been running into things and fighting. Gary said the same thing. He was with three other old bulls. I suppose there is some pecking order even with duggaboys.

BigMaxx,
A bull elephant hunt with Magara would be the pinacle of bull elephant hunts. I've been told that Magara can look at a set of prints and often recognize the elephant. He'll then know whether the track is worth following.
Comments like, "Ah, Roger and I followed this track ten years ago in October, and when we caught him, we found he had fifty pound ivory..." And he isn't making it up, its true.
That would be a treat.

I can't wait. I sincerely hope that another dream can become reality. I want to do that hunt with a double rifle too. Now the search begins. Magara is quite a fellow. When do you leave John? Your getting close arent you? -Max

Hay!! It looks like the hunt I dream of!!! No fair! Just wish it was me! Great looking hunt. Must have been a blast. The bag mix looks like what I would like to put together. Nice looking rifle too.

Max,
I leave the 28th.
On the double rifle topic, unless you are a collector for collecting sake, I would point you toward a newer rifle. There is a nice "as new" Searcy in 450NE for sale in the AR Classified. Hornaday will be making brass if they don't already since they are bringing the cartridge out this fall.
This rifle should give you 480grs at 2150fps or so, which it good for elephants.
Of course I'm not sure if the rifle would fit yu or not, but you might want to take a look. I have no interest in the rifle or the seller, fyi.

Thank you all for your kind comments and all the help and encouragement during the planning and preparation. Especially to Ripp for all his help. I had him and JPK on NE Forums, PMs, emails and telephone for the last two months! I can't imagine what it would have been like without the advice and help you all gave me. A hillbilly in Africa, what a trip!
