Decisions on my 358 NM

Originally i was going to re barrel my 308 NM in a PH `98 commercial...I have since changed my mind (nearly/just about) to using my near on 30 year old Win mod 70 7mm mag instead,one is going to be the platform for the rifle and its my final decision before i send it off to one of two gunsmiths that i have to decide between also.

What do the learned men(and gals) of NE think? I know classics are often built on `98`s but i truly love the way my Mod 70 handles and feels,its been part of my sambar hunting life for a long time.

What would you do?

Oh! I am sticking to 358 NM ..thats it!

maybe the only thing you will have to do is to change the barrels and no other work on the railings!
So you will have the chance to reanimate your 7mm Rem in minutes.....
Try the feeding-action of a .358 NM cartridge in your 7mm Rem - if it startes without problems into the chamber-opening you are a true winner.....
(but if not so - some additional work on the railings will be needed....)

One gunsmith wanted three live rounds to use to make certain it will have no feed probs,he`s onto it.

Have the new barrel put on. If it feeds, just great and it probably will. If the gun fed correctly as a 7mm, it will probably feel perfectly as a .358NM. The Norma is a bit longer but the belt, the deciding factor in most feed problems, is the same, so feeding should be the same. There is no reason to add to the cost of a job for problems that don't exist. Any gun smith worth his salt will check feeding after re-barreling.
Yes - he needs ammo to check headspace and feeding properly.

Be careful on your barrel contour. Though not an excessive recoiler, if you use the same contour as your 7mmRM, the rifle will end up lighter and recoil harder. If you up the barrel contour then you'll need to re-inlet the stock. Either way a fresh recoil pad may be worth it.
Which gunsmith is doing the work and has the reamer?

You say a "near on 30 year old" Model 70, so I'm assuming that is when it was manufactured, hence not a Classic, introduced in 1994. Unlike the pre-64 models, feeding is determined by the guide lips on the magazine box, not by the rails, so converting from a 7mm Remington Magnum should present no problems. Also, since the magazine length is 3.72", .22" longer than that of the pre-64 Model 70, you should be able to seat bullets out as long as you like.

The .358 Norma Magnum is simply a belted version, with slightly less case capacity, of the .35 Newton, invented by Charles Newton in 1915. Newton claimed 2975 fps. with the 250 grain bullet, which is phenominal performance with the powders then available.

Neuton's ballistics, especially considering the powders then available were a bit inflated, I think. Even IMR4350 was in the future, I believe.

Newton's case was pretty close to an 8x68S case, necked for .358" bullets - just thinking aloud - seems to me I looked those measurements up once, same base at .522".

The .358 will drive 250gr. about as fast as needed for any game in Normth America and lots faster than any of the mediums used in Africa. A premium bullet should be used due to it's speeds, however for pure accuracy, mine liked 62gr of IMR3031 with a 250 Speer. I once beat a 6x47 BR rifle, group for group at 100 yards using that load. My largest 5 shot group was well under 3/8". That was a factory BRNO rifle. This round will shoot if you've the tenacity to extract that accuracy from something that kicks about the same as the .375H&H - mine did, but not quite that hard with that load. I think it will easily do about 2,850fps with 250's, but I'd prefer a 280gr. to 300gr. if possible. I suspect Woodleigh or Barnes has a good bullet in .358".

Sounds like your good to go. I've ordered an Adams & Bennett 35cal profiled barrel blank and am trying to work out what to do with it. The 358Norma is like a sirens call to me, but I have other projects to finish first. Damn it but the cheap blued S/H Rugers so prevalent a few years back seem to have dried up. I'd love a blued/walnut Ruger in 358Norma. You've picked a good 'smith and another I'd recommend with a reamer are TSE (MAB) in Qld. Tony built mine and a mates 458AccRel's, plus has another with him now and he does really good work. Pays to shop with them as well if using an MAB barrel, good price and fast turn around of under 6 weeks.

That 7mmRM/Pre-64 of yours just keeps bowling em over mate. I'd stick with it!
