404 Jeffery

I broke the original stock on my 404 Jefferey a couple of years ago. Just got it back with the new stock from Mark Stratton. It is an exact copy of the original complete with original metal butt plate and original horn grip cap.

It is a small ring Mauser. One of less than 20 .404s built by Jeffery on the small ring.

A Holland and Holland type bolt peep I added on a new cocking piece.

BEAUTIFUL rifle!!!

The 404 is my choice for large medium bore cartridges.

I love mine and i think that when irestock it I have some serious inspiration now!!!

Sorry for two posts but...

does your 404 have a full magazine box or does it just have front and rear shims and no sides, similar to a blind magazine?

I ask because I have seen this done on a few and am thinking of using this on my 404 as well.

Any thoughts Mickey?

The rifle has a full box. I haven't seen one without sides as you describe. I think the rigidity that the sides help supply is important as, at least my rifle, is fairly light at 8.5 pounds.

There is a button on the right side and when pushed the sight lowers down out of the way.

Very nice Mickey.

How does it shoot? Was it responsible for the hide it is laying on, or did you acquire the rifle at a later date?

Mickey, great rifle! And a very practical looking setup as well.

A couple questions:

You said original. Did the original have the monte carlo? Who made it?

I like the grain flow thru the grip, too. Stockmaker doesn't want it to break again. I see lots of CZ's that have grain flow that looks liked stacked leather washers in the grip area and I'm always curious just how strong they are, assuming they get used much at all.

No kickpad. I'm curious as the style of rifle with monte carlo would indicate an age when pads were considered common. Your comments on that?

Yes that is one that I shot with the 404. Tanzania in 1978, near the Lumbe Swamp.

I beleive that the rifle is original from Jeffery with that stock. I can't swear by it though. Rifle was made in the mid 20's. I got it in Tanzania in 1978 and it was there for at least 30 years prior.

No idea on the recoil pad but, to be honest, one is not needed.

This is a very soft shooting rifle.

Gorgeous rifle - it begs to be taken out on an adventure.

Slightly off the subject, I notice you mentioned that you added a cocking piece peep sight on a new cocking piece. I've ordered a similar sight from Robert Zimmerman, and he mentioned that military actions need to have some modifications made as they don't have the longer, Oberndorf cocking piece. (I hope I'm getting that right.)

What all went on with your decision to add a cocking piece rear sight, and with the way you wound up doing it?

I can't remember the fellow's name who made it but he lives in Richland Washington. He also had a large amount of different Mauser parts and he supplied the proper cocking piece.

He has sold out to Jim Wisner of Chehalis WA. so if you have an interest you can contact him. I have no number but check the phone book.

I needed the peep sight as my eyes are not good enough anymore for open sights past about 50 yards. I didn't want to put a scope on it as I didn't want to drill any holes in the action. The bolt peep is both traditional and easy.

The sight is silver soldered to the cocking piece.

One thing I forgot to mention is why I silver soldered it instead of having a dovetail cut.

It was because of the two stage trigger. After you pull to the first stop the Mauser coking piece rotates a small degree. If it was dovetailed it would be very hard to position and the risk of ruining the cocking piece by cutting it wrong was too great. Bey soldering it you can simply reheat and move to put the piece int the perfect position.

I have since switched to a Timmny triggger and, since it is much tighter, eliminated the bolt movement. If I had dovetailed it I would have had to throw away the cocking piece and get another.
