All

I am looking to get a double rifle and am considering one of these. I understand the cartridge is to duplicate the 416 Rigby performance. I would like to hear any comments about the cartridge, and the rifle as well.

I have never owned a DR and would like to be well informed prior to dropping a very substantial portion of my salary and also probably having to pay for a lawyer when my wife finds out

I know there is a wealth of knowledgeable people here that can definitely help me make a good decision.

Thanks
Brad

Brad,
The Blaser is a "modern" design with a safety/cocking feature which I do not like also it has a cover or shroud over the breech when opened would slow down a fast reload also the calibre 500/416 is a newer cartridge that duplicates the 416Rigby and I presume the same pressure which you do not want in a double!.

I would go for a Heym in 450/400 a much better rifle.

Steve

What is your reasoning? I too like the sounds of the 450/400 in either of those but can't seem to find one of those in my price range. I believe I can get the S2 for about $6k.

S2 in a 500/416 is all about logic

- not much of a classic look and nostalgic feel there
- very strong (if not the strongest) action so it can handle slightly higher pressures of 500/416 without sweat,
- cock thing makes it very safe to cary and you can get used to with litle practice (same as auto safety)
- hardest thing for me to get used to would be a hood above chambers and I guess it may slow down fast reloading (if there is any practical need for that in the field?) - no ejectors option either
- as you noticed very attractive price for a technicaly improved "tool" and if money wouldn't be a problem no doubt Heym would be the obvious option, however S2 is 1/2 a price!
- same with 500/416 cal. - lacks all the patina but has all the nice physics you can get from .416, balisticaly quite superior to 450/400.
- very accurate

If you can live with that than go for it.

P.S. Before you jump on it, handle one and you will know if thats what you want.

Brad,
93mouse has summarised it better than me, and if my budget was $6000 and I really wanted a double I would buy it maybe get a Heym later or you may really like the Blaser, for that price a 40 plus calibre is good value even with its modern features.

S2 also posses another thing that may make your life easy if you want to scope it - Blaser's saddle mount is a neat feature.

Just a personal thought on 500/416 cal - IMO it is a .400 caliber/400 gr bullet with a kick close to .470 NE/500gr. - so I would have hard times to justify one, unless I would intend to shoot over longer distances which I guess I wouldn't. So exclusively for closest distances and nasty things I'd rather pick 470 and for major hunting something with lower recoil like 450/400 or even 9,3x74R - so tough one.

Brad,

I have an S2 in 9.3x74R and I love the rifle. Very accurate and it is very quick on target for me. The 500/416 is built on another frame, so the handling might be different. Try one before you buy.
