Plans for a stand-up shooting rest ?/
      #114052 - 09/09/08 10:42 PM

Does anyone have, or know where I can find, plans to build a stand-up shooting rest?

PS: Even good photographs would be helpful.

I third the request.

I just came from the range where I shot my 9.3x74R from the bench. I had the sxs in a T cradle with my shoulder in the pad and my hand under the forearm. Resting on the cradle is 20 pounds of bagged shot; Ouch.

Will shooting from a standing position change the point of impact?

Kindest regards,

Carpediem

I am BTT this post, as I am also trying to find a set of drawings, prints or other visual guidelines for building a standing adjuctable DR bench. This is to be built for our county range by folks who need visual guidance, not simply a narrative. I believe some were published in a Craig Boddington article some years ago (10?). Maybe in HUNTING magazine?

Fellows,

I routinely use a single staff as a support for offhand shooting. My homemade shooting stick is oak, has a rounded chisel point for stabbing into the ground, and a loop of 3/8" rope at the top. If convenient for the shot, I will place my left hand inside the loop before grasping the rifle. If that is too high, I grasp the staff with the two little fingers and use the other three for holding the rifle. This is a hunting expedient. While not nearly as stable as shooting from a benchrest, it is a tremendous improvement over shooting offhand. The staff is easy to transport as a walking stick, or simply carried in one hand.

I've just put the finishing touches on two new staffs (one for a friend), as my old one was damaged. The old stick was made from 3/4" stock. Although I'm still using it, I had to shorten it by about an inch because it was crushed in a car door at the hole drilled for the rope. The new staffs are made from 1" stock, and should be more robust. They are octagonal in cross section, and made primarily on a table saw. The chisel point is free handed on the table saw, then cleaned up on a bench-top sander. After finish sanding, they are stained and then sealed with polyurathane.

I've taken some nice game using the shooting stick. It is a tremendous aid to accurate field shooting.

Take care, Tom

I'm about to make an upholstered stand from the cut-down frame of my kids' old swing. I intend to have adjustable elbow pads below the normal height so the right arm can be held low to make more muscle tension in the right shoulder. I'm also considering a LIGHT weight on a string over the main bar, leading back to a leather thong over the butt, to reduced recoil slightly. This weight setup has an instant adjustment provision and a compression tent spring to reduce danger to the rifle under initial shock of discharge. Whether point of impact is affected by this stuff remains to be seen.

Cheers

This is one I built a few years ago.

As you can see it allows a shooter to stand erect and is also adjustable for height.

It takes down into these parts. The 'shelf' is the right height to sit on top of the benches at my shooting club so I can use it there without the legs.

Here are some pictures of my new rest, made from a cut-down-and-narrowed kids' swing set. The oblique bar is the other half of the original top-bar, and can be adjusted for fit. Wingnuts allow it all to be taken down for transport. The grey sleeves on the feet are for height adjustment but obviously not enough - I may have to put bricks under this one.

The cushions are adjustable, vinyl over soft and closed-cell foam sewed up or upholstery-tacked to wooden bases. for a really solid rest, leather sand bags would be better but may possibly be less db-rifle friendly.

No, that is not a db rifle yours truly is posed with; the Heym is still being finished in Germany.
A couple of tips: don't wait for the photo shoot to test it with a firearm. Holding up your hands like a bare-nuckle boxer gives no idea how its going to work. If you need to have the frame square on to the target, the RH side of the oblique bar would need to be chocked out.

Cheers

Sorry guys,
I'll have to consult the computer gurus (kids) to get this to work.
Cheers

OK, try this and you should get the whole swag of pic taken in my grotty back yard against the firewall of the neighbour's extension.

Cheers
