Ancient Tradition.
      #113272 - 02/09/08 03:12 AM

Well, maybe not quite ancient, but it is tradition!

Since my son could walk, we have headed out Sept 1 every year chasing grouse. He's been with me even before he carried a gun and since he was 10, with a gun.

It was 26 degrees F when we left, brisk and beautiful. We walked the creekbeds across the river from my place and had a good time.

We both got a couple.

Heard a lot more!

Keep the tradition till your both 100! Wonderful times and great take. In the 20's already?!?! It was in the mid 90's here at mid morning.
I hope my sons will continue to join me as we go in the field. I have two that will and the other likes to shoot.
Keep it up.
Good hunting to bothof you.

I managed 2 Blues here in Colorado on opening day with my Springers. I'm going to try to get out Friday morning and then head out for a small road trip for them Saturday to the North central part of the state. Populations seem to be on the rise.

boulder:

We have no blues right here, some a ways away.

Our bird populations, like elsewhere, are highly cyclical, and go up and down over the years. This year and last, they are good.

For the ruffed grouse we shoot, a dog always seems to get in the way. We have used one in the past, but the birds flush unseen if a dog is used.

Some guys use dogs here, but that is when they are shooting them the "traditional" Idaho way...driving the roads with a dog in the back of the pickup or on a board on the 4-wheeler. Birds appear on the edges of logging roads at dawn and dusk!

I literally do not know anyone in my county that specifically hunts grouse on foot except for us, and we get ribbed about it all the time. I've always been a "walker" as it is good exercise and it just seems "righter" and I feel alot better about myself when I come home. Cheaper, too, now that fuel has escalated so high.

Cover is very thick and terrain rugged, and shots this time of year very close and thus the riot/slug barrel and or open choke on Sonny's gun. We also use pistols and "pop-gun" loads in the deer/elk rifles and of course during elk season when we are worn out and tired from not seeing elk the odd grouse gets his head removed by a full power load, too.

I still need a combo gun, but with kids lining up for university I doubt that is going to happen for a while...

Looks like a lot of fun---don't hunt birds as much as I used to however read with interest that "no one you know in your country hunts grouse on foot"...when I was a kid, other than huns, that was the only bird we had to chase---some of my best bird hunting memories are doing that across the rolling plains in N Dakota...crisp fall mornings, friends and lots of birds...carrying my single shot 12 gauge "Coast to Coast " made by Stevens shotgun I bought for $39.95 with my summer wages...granted they were sharptail --but grouse just the same..and lots of gun...keep up the tradition...

Actually, county. Alot of guys shoot chukar and pheasants, etc elsewhere, but here in logging country, long ago it seems grouse shooting got married to pickups and ATV's and makes for relaxation, tooling around the logging roads.

Like you, I grew up brushbusting, shooting mostly pheasants and rabbits back in New Jersey!

Your singleshot would have blended in well with my crowd of friends; I and one friend both had Ithaca Supersingle 66's {his a 20, mine a 12}, another of my buddy's had a Mossberg 12 ga bolt action and another a real doozy, the Real Deal for us, a Fox Sterlingworth 12 ga double. That gun eventually convinced me to part with both my Ithaca and a pile of lawn-mowing dollars to buy a...Stevens 311, a 12 gauge with 30 inch barrels. A real club if there ever was one!

Anyway, we love walking.
