Found a rifle to start my .505gibbs
      #11309 - 10/03/04 12:42 PM

After some time of really only half looking for a Ruger 77 in .416 for my Bowen arms .505gibbs conversion I final found one. The time has come for my conversion I log into Bowens site to get the contact info and of course they are not taking orders now while having problems with the suppliers.

http://www.bowenclassicarms.com/rifles.html

So anyone know of another shop that could do the work for a reasonable rate? The interest in this rifle from the beginning was a low cost fun big boar that I really never plan on hunting with simply a fun boomer, so on this rifle price is a concern as most its life will be in the safe or display cabinet.

Ed at American Hunting Rifles make conversions to 500 AHR. This is more an improved Jefferys without the rebated rim and has an improved and longer neck. The bore size is .510. I think www.huntingrifles.com

Thanks 475, I actually have one of Eds rifles my .458lott and have him in the process of building me another right now. I can not say enough about him and love his work not to mention he is a nice stand up guy, he has done a good job on my rifles and now offers many different grades of English fine wood recently added to his options. Eds average project is 4500$ and on the 500AHR he recommends the granite action thats a 10K rifle at the least with no real options I am unsure if he would do a simply re chamber and barrel on a Ruger but I was planning to call him and see. Thanks for the recommendation.

I know he's pushing the Granite action but has told me that he could do a conversion on a Ruger. The only problem I can see is in opening the feed rails just right and getting the right bottom metal to hold more that 2 or 3 down. I was also wondering about whether the Ruger action had enough room for the fatter 500 rounds being staggered. Just a bit of a wish for a dream rifle right now.

Since this is a place to post opinions, here goes....

I would suggest selling the Ruger and your two AHR's and sending Ryan Breeding a check for $10K for a 5 shot 505 gibbs on the Granite Mountain Arms action. He can color case harden the receiver for you to provide a beautiful results, and his stockwork is outstanding. Although a Ruger conversion is cheaper, I do not think it is worth the investment since it is more of a 'halfway' sort of project.

See www.rbbigbores.com for more info.

The problem with the M77 RSM is that the magazine box is too short for the 505 Gibbs. It is plenty wide enough, just too damned short. The 500 Jeffery and/or 500 AHR feed just fine from the stock Ruger RSM 416 Rigby mag box, albiet the feed ramp needs widened. Also, you will need to drop the bottom about 0.25" to comfortably fit 3 rounds of 505 Gibbs, a little less to get the 500 Jeffery/AHR to fit. This isn't as difficult to do as one might think since the Ruger uses 2 piece bottom metal.

The last major issue is that the Ruger has NO receiver recoil lug. So one must fabicate either:
1.) A recoil plate which is sandwiched between barrel and receiver (cheesy solution looks like a M700)
2.) Fabricate and fit two recoil lugs to the underside of the barrel. This is easy to do if one is reboring the Ruger barrel since it has a second 1/4 rib on the bottom side of the barrel (pretty much like the one on top).

Personally, I think 500grains has the right of it though.

Scott

A fine 505 Gibbs can be built reasonably economically on a M30 Remintong action. Buy a P-14 bolt and a Wisner 505 Gibbs mag box/ triggerguard and send it to Dennis Olsen. He will modify the bolt and action to feed 505 Gibbs rounds for about $125. Buy a pac-Nor barrel and a good barrel mounted recoil lug and any decent gunsmith with a 505 reamer can put it together for you. Given that you'll need a decent stock, the whole thing could be put together for well under $2000. I would not waste my time on a Ruger for this cartridge. I saw a similar gun to what I described on sale at the last Vegas gunshow for $5K. -Rob

500grains,

I like my AHR very much and do not think I will ever let it go. I would not want the .505 to hunt I like my .458 for that purpose the .505 was simply a big boar plinker at a reasonable rate so the number of rounds down would not be as big a concern. The site you posted has some very nice rifles and the Granite Mountain Arms action is the way to go no question for your primary hunting rifle. I should have had the AHRs built on the granite but live and learn not that the CZ dose not work just fine for me. I do like the case hardening a lot. You opinion is welcome.

Ray,

I wasn't aware Butch would do smaller projects like this I though he only sold his packages. I will definitely call him first thanks for the information.

Rob,

That sounds like a nice option, the only reason I picked the Ruger was due to Bowens build. I bought it cheap so getting rid of it would not be to hard if I decide to go the way you suggested, 2K is about what I had in mind so this may be my best option after I speak with butch and see what he wants to build the ruger.

Why would you make a recoil lug? The Ruger bedding bar
on those rifles are 5 times better.Ed

You will have a good strong rifle with the Ruger, and once Mag box is lengthened, etc, by someone like Bowen it will feed fine.Keep us posted on how it is going as I
always wanted to see a Gibbs on a Ruger Magnum.Ed.

I had a 505 Gibbs built on a P14 enfield action. The barrel was bored and turned with a barrel recoil as part of the barrel. The finnishing work was done by another gunsmith.
The whole package proberly cost about $3000.00 Canadian.
