Remington Double pair
      #112906 - 29/08/08 01:11 PM

Been lurking for a while and wanted to make my first post. I've always loved double rifles but they are out of my price range other than what Remington offers. Needless to say I jumped at the oppertunity to get one when they came out. I've had the 30-06 for a few months now and have done a little hunting with it. Today I picked up the 45-70 brother.
Some pics...

If you would, give us some info on how the 30-06 shoots and what loads you have tried in it.

Also same for the 45/70 when you get a chance to shoot it.

Double rifles are great hunting guns.

The 45-70 is interesting--how much does it weigh??

So far I have only tried the cheap Federal blue box 150gr in the 06. The gun was shooting a foot low at 50 out of the box but the two barrels hit just under 1" apart so I didn't have to do any regulation, just a simple front sight adjustment. Hopefully I get that lucky with the 45-70.
For the 45/70 I'm going to start with some Leverevolution and some hand loads in 300gr than are similar to factory Remington. I've got some 405gr sitting around but I load them hotter for the Marlin GG and don't want to chance the confusion and putting a hotter load in this one.

The bathroom scale says it weighs 6 lbs, which feels about right. The only external differnece between the 45-70 and 30-06 is the rear sight. The 30 has a low rear sight (I guess the expect more people to scope it), the 45 is high enough that it shoulders just right.

It amy not compare to the $10k rifles, and I wouldn't expect it to, but it really is a beautiful gun thats comfortable to carry in the woods and shoots good.

Brian,

Those are damned fine looking guns and they shoot beautifully. Call me cheap (partly because I am semi retired and cannot afford anything very expensive ) but even if I had a lot of money, I would much rather buy guns like these that I would be happy shooting and hunting with instead of something very expensive that I would be scared to take out in the field for fear of marking it.

A very good friend in the UK who occasionally posts here had an exquisite Bar in Wood MacNaughton gun that he sold because he nearly got a heart attack whenever he went hunting with it.

You are a wise man and your guns are fantastic. I hope we get to see many more fine hunting pictures here in the future. You have to show your trophies off here - you have fine rifles to hunt them with.

Good hunting and one more warm welcome to these forums!

I am curious about the 45-70. I wonder about the gun and if its regulated for 400's at 40,000 cup(1895 Marlin pressures)or are we talking trapdoor pressures. Does Remington say??

Nice job Brian, and welcome!

Keep posting and please share your opinions of the guns, and groups fired, too. There's been a lot of talk on this forum about the guns but not alot of extensive reporting of shooting results by those who own them.

Dive in and thanks for posting!!

bwananelson

Are you referring to me or 400Nitro ?

I generally don't post pressure or reloading data unless out of good books (ie Graeme Wrights), hence my reference to where I got it from in my original post so people could go looking.

If referring to 400Nitro, I'll let him post the correct forumla.

Yes, your question was answered. You just chose to ignore it. Remington has answered same on their website, specific to this rifle.

Yes there are the same number on the side of the barrel that have been posted on gunbroker. I read that it equates to trap door loads. That's fine by me, trapdoor loads have had no problem passing through american bison and other such animals. It may not be intended for the big three in Africa but would do plenty on damage on a large bear or any other big game animal. I will mostly hunt feral hogs with mine, if I ever make it to Africa for something in those top three I have a Rem 798 in 458 win mag that will do just fine.
I hope to have more pictures soon of sucessful hunts with my double rifles.

A question:

Is anyone aware of any current .45-70 that is warranted by the MAKER for anything over 28,000?

It is a lot easier for a maker to state the gun good for factory Trapdoor levels than to go further since most factory loads are loaded to this level. This makes total sense from a product liability standpoint since the maker cannot possibly know what pressures somebody's handload is going to generate.

How do any of us truly know what pressures many of our .45-70 handloads DO generate without having them tested on pressure equipment?

Remington isn't that stupid to state the gun good for some service pressure at which no factory loads are available.

As I stated in an earlier post, I would not buy a .45-70 Baikal second hand, just like I have always steered clear of S&W 29-2's and earlier .44 Mags unless I can fully inspect them before buying. Too much experimentation with unknown heavy loads.

Having said that, I can imagine some might be eager to experiment with stouter-than-Trapdoor loads in the Baikal. I just might myself if I owned one of the guns as I like to monkey with the .45-70.

And thus the reason I wouldn't buy one 2nd Hand.

And before somebody pitches a rock at Brianj for saying so, I agree 100% with his assessment of the "softball", Trapdoor-level, factory loads and N. American game. A 300 at 1800 and a 405 at 1200 will kill a lot of stuff, and has.
