Gail Selby, her elephant, and Bell's .275 Rigby
      #81116 - 22/06/07 12:31 AM

The topic of one of Bell's .275 Rigby rifles that had been given to Mark Selby by Robert Ruark was being discussed over on AR a couple of days ago. Unexpectedly, Gail Selby herself chimed in on the thread. She asked a friend of hers to post a photo in the thread for her. I thought you guys would enjoy seeing it.

"Like Harry, his children Mark and Gail grew up in the shadow of acacia trees and within the sound of roaring lions. At the age of 14, Gail hunted an elephant with her father taking a bull with 50-pound tusks. On that hunt she used a Rigby .275 originally belonging to the legendary elephant hunter Karamoja Bell, and which had been given to her brother Mark by his godfather, Robert Ruark."
from "Harry Selby - An African Legend"
by Joe Coogan

Gail's web site is worth a visit! see: http://gabrimaun.tripod.com/
Joe Coogan's article about Harry Selby (that I quoted above) is on Gail's web site.

Cheers!
-Bob F.

Well, it seems that fellow forum member georgegibbs505 now owns this rifle! And, there are photos that he has been kind enough to share!

I hope he'll share a story or two about acquiring the rifle, etc.

Enjoy!

Sorry..... I'm running at a screen resolution of 1280x1024 and the pics are 800x600. I forget some times that some people are running at a lower screen resolution/size.

I am writing a book on Bell, and have been looking high and low for that gun. I contacted Harry Selby, and he said he did not know what became of it. That tricky old hunter. I guess he thought I may want to steal it or something. May I use the pictures of his rifle in my book?
I own his 318 Westley Richards, made by Thomas Bland and Sons.
How do I put pictures on this forum? I would love to show you guys and girls the other Bell gun.
It was authenticated by Thomas Bland and Sons as beloging to Bell in 1911.

You should contact the owner by private message and ask him, as they are his pictures. If you are unable to reach him I can try emailing him for you.

To post pictures you need to host them on a site like Photobucket first and then paste the image code into your post.

Gail Selby's website made me all fuzzy. If I ever decide I've just had enough, Maun is one of the places on my list to disappear to. The Joe Coogan article was great too. One of the PH's listed was Simon Paul, he led the first photo safari I went on in the Okavango delta. He was extremely entertaining to say the least.

+1

Just reading the intro and it seems that it would have been a wonderful life in that era. Tomorrow I will finish the stories, thanks for posting and to Ben for giving it a true 'Second Life' for those who missed it on the first time round like me.

Cheers,

Bob F,

Thanks very much for the photos and information on this peice of history.

I've just received the latest Safari magazine and it contains and article "The Red Man" by Silvio Calabi, Steve Hensley and Roger Sanger and it contains photos and further information on this particular rifle.

If memory serves correct this trio also wrote Hemingway's guns and did a great job.

I hope more of these historic firearms are bought out into the light along with their stories.

The notch in the stock of Bells 275 Rigby was so his gunbearers spear would fit inside for easier carrying and could also get the Rigby to Bell in a hurry

Shouldn't be surprised Bob, some rifles, riflemen and hunters have universal and ongoing interest for many of us and some have these threads in a favorites folder so we can re-visit and like this thread http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/4296435/1 on Osa Johnsons Oberndorf 9.3x62 has a importance as well as an interesting and informative content that NEEDS to be bumped on ocasions for those who may not have seen it before but also for those of us who just enjoy the historically important hnters and thier rifles.
