Scent for Africa??
      #111114 - 05/08/08 10:07 AM

Alright, all you experienced African hunters and old hats get ready to laugh here. What about scents for Africa? Not elephant cow in heat or anything like that! But what about scent killers and nonscent body soaps and shampoo? Just asking. I saw Steve Scott on Safari Hunters Journal use some, but they may have been financing his hunt...LOL. I have aways heard the dumbest question is the one you dont ask. Well, I hope that's true.

Unless you are sitting alone in a blind by a waterhole, I can't imagine it will do any good. You need the wind in your favor, unless you plan to bathe and shampoo and spray the PH, trackers, and game scout (where applicable).

I see. This is my first trip, I thought they might...LOL. At least we can all laugh a little. Maybe I should move this thread to the Fun and Humor forum!

You had me worried there for a second. I don't think I would want to see a bull elephant with that twinkle of love in his eye headed my way. A charge is one thing but when he has something else in mind.....

Using soap when showering in the evening hasn't seemed to make much of a difference for me when hunting in Africa, since as Charles pointed out you need the wind in your face unless in a blind . But I'd try to stick to something that isn't perfumed.

FWIW though, I have found that when hunting moose here at home that I generally have better luck when I don't use soap at all for a couple of weeks, but just shower off the worst grime with plain water. So maybe this might be a good idea when sitting in an african blind, where you don't have total control of the wind direction.

Another option is to find some fresh elephant dung, lay down in it and roll around. The smell might help camouflage your own scent. I'm not sure your PH would volunteer to join you though.

I don't think it really matters much as if the wind is in your favour, they're not gona smell you and if it isn't, they will. - Hell (in the Selous) I've even smoked in a Lion blind with something like 20 odd Lions/Lionesses laying around the bait about 20 yards away, but as the wind was in my favour, it didn't cause any problems. I have also on occasion, either in a blind or when waiting for a herd of resting Buffalo to stand up, lit a few lumps of Elephant shit to hide our scent if we had swirling winds...... The animals are very used to the smell of smouldering (natural) odds and ends in the bush.

That all makes sense. When I deer hunt I use a nonscent body wash and rinse with a strong baking soda solution. I might do that. I still think the "elephant cow in heat" might be interesting....LOL! I may start up a new business, get Craig Boddington's picture on the label. Who wants the first bottle?

Bigmax
In my opinion, all the scents, scentblockers, etc. are a big marketing effort to sell a bunch of "snake oil" ...as pretty much everyone on here has conveyed..as long as you keep the wind in your favor...you will do fine--if not in your favor..I don't care if you are in a plastic bag--they will still smell you...

Look at the dogs in airports...people have illegals items in plastic bags in metal containers in their suite cases...the dogs still pick it up...does anyone think the scent goes completely away by wearing a "scent blocker suite"...while it may lessen it..there is no way it completely eliminates it..IMHO...

I bow hunt quite a bit for elk, antelope, deer and black bear...again, no matter what I wear, if the wind is right, I get in on the game...if not..adios..they are gone...

The elephant urine might be a good sales tactic...who knows...you could become rich...

I'm going to toss this in and try my best to word it in a way that :

A} Prevents you guys from thinking I'm nuts and a total freak

B} Gets a couple of you to try the same thing

Here goes...

I totally agree with what has been said here. Sort of. Really, whatever you do, particularly in a warm climate is going to be pretty much erased by perspiration very quickly.

But...

Along the lines of scents,

I have experimented for years with various "Home Grown" scents and have found the following.

QUANTITY matters, and for even that reason alone most store-bought scents are quite ridiculous as they come in essentially tiny bottles and are thus in essence {no pun intended} "snake oil". How many of you fellows have smelled an elk? A bull is literally varnished underneath with continuous applications of "body fluids". Ditto a big billy goat.

IF you want to see an interesting attractant or something to hold game on a trail, try several gallons of your own urine. Yup, pop in a DVD of Lawrence of Arabia, sit down to a big pitcher of iced tea or a six-pack of you favorite brew, and keep an empty milk jug handy.

Pee Away!

I once read that as soon as the aromatic hormones evaporate, most all urine smells the same, even to game. I don't know if that is true, but I do know that deer and elk are fascinated by high concentrations of human urine. A bit of scratched up earth is all it takes, with the urine dumped into it, and all over a neighboring tree to-boot. I do NOT know if this represents "bait" so check with your game department first.

I have mixed sheep, horse and cattle dung into my "Love Elixirs" and all seem to work pretty much as well as the other, and none seem to add much over 200 proof neat People-Pee.

And when you see them eat the urine-soaked earth or take bites of the urine-soaked tree limbs or rub their heads and shoulders all over same, don't be surprised!

One last thing, as far as cover scents are concerned.

A friend of mine who specializies in shooting big whitetail bucks uses a pair of electric heated socks that have been soaked in many bottles of store-bought deer scent. He hangs the socks up by his blind and swears that once the heat kicks in they work like a charm. I've never used them, but the concept is interesting.

9.3x57

I too have read the same thing about urine...human or otherwise..

Another really weird item I read a long time ago--back in the '80's..was by a big time trophy Whitetail hunter..believe it was Gene Wensel (not sure on the name)...anyway, he used his wife's used tampons and hung them in a tree during the rut...as crazy as it sounds to me anyway..he swore this worked...wow....the things we do for hunting...

Max,

When you smell the trackers you'll wonder why you bothered with scent killers, showers and fresh laundry.

On count B....not a chance.

On count A, you were doing fine until you mentioned sitting down with that notorious homosexual Lawerence of Arabia and a jug of piss.

Although it does remind me of being caught in need of an immediate dump whilst Jaco and I were travelling a deserted sand road in the middle of nowhere in the dead of night.
Not wishing to tramp around the bush in the blackness I elected the safest option, that being the middle of the road.
Did rather chuckle of the thought of the tourist hunter prodding that pile in the morning and enquiring of their PH of which animal passed this way last night.

Standing there looking at his No. 1 Enfield with the notches cut in the stock at the British War Museum, I wondered for a moment what they were cut for...

Ain't that the truth, eh?

The problem with having the wind in your favor while tracking is that the trackers are upwind of you.

On the other hand, I do believe that game in the areas I've hunted differentiated between the scent of a PH or client and that of the trackers or gamescouts, being afraid of the PH or client and not so concerned about the others.

Sometimes around waterholes this would be apparent. The trackers would circle looking for tracks and game would take note, but if the PH made the rounds then game would be leaving the brush surrounding the waterhole.

Maxx, skip the scents, not worth the trouble.

JPK
