      #10443 - 29/02/04 07:19 PM

9.3x74R or 375 H&H !!!!!

In the hunt......

a) Bernardelli
b) Chapuis
c) Heym 88B
d) Krieghoff
e) Perugini-Visini

Of the 5 listed above.......

(1) do you have any 1st hand experience...good or bad....be specicic.

(2) If they were all priced the same, would it change you options.

First off I would never own a double in .375 caliber or any none rimmed caliber for that matter..but the 375 just conjurs up too much pressure for a double IMO...

Of the ones mention, the only one that I would have would be the Heym but I would suggest a William Douglas or better yet the new Searcy PH, which is what I presently have and I like it really well, other than that I would only have an English gun...I like Jefferys, Army/Navy and a few others in the plain jane figuration.

Now this is only my personal opinnion and a couple of thoes makes I have not even seen, but have talked to folks who have, and whos judgment I respect...

I would go with the Heym. Great quality, and accuracy. And this is coming from a Chapuis 9.3 owner. My Chapuis shots great, but the finishing inside the boxlock was not great, and Chapuis's customer service leaves much to be desired (and this is not a French manufacterer being snooty to Americans thing, most of my French friend have said the same thing about Chapuis they just don't care about their customers). I would also like to add the smaller French firm Demas and the Rippamonti's to your list if you can find them imported here.

Oh I almost forgot to add I second Ray's comment on the not buying rimless doubles. THe 9.3x74r is a better choice in a double rifle than a rimless 375H&H. Now if you could get a 375 flanged.... THat changes things! I do believe Heym makes or used to make a 375 rimmed.

DB,

I would think that a DR in 375 H&H FM would be the most versitile DR one could have, as a general hunting rifle.

I absolutely love my 9,3s, but have concede this one to the 375...FM, not H&H belted...

Of the manufacturers mentioned, I've only owned a Heym, and thought it an excellent firearm...so did the scoundrel who paid me too much for it.

DBBill
I was prepared to buy a 375 H&H double one time from a dealer that knew me well. He flat out told me not to do it.
He recommended a 9,3x74R instead. I have been using a Chapuis double in 9,3 for about 4 to 5 years. I like it very well and recommend it highly. I prefer it to any 375 Bolt for DG. I have also shot a 470 Chapuis. It shot and handled well, but I prefer a British double in 40 cal and up.
I handled a Perugini & Visini in 9,3 at the Dallas Safari show that felt real good, but you cannot go wrong with the Chapuis.
You can get the Krieghoff in 375 Flanged.

I am also very interested in the opinions of people
on the double rifles mentioned.I handled a very nice
Demas in Paris two years ago in a shop dedicated to African
rifles but unfortunately they have no distributor in Australia.
Does anyone have an opinion on the Merkel-local rumour
has it they shoot loose?
Has anyone handled a Heym 55B O/U.It also comes in 470 with ejectors.

DB, I think that there is enough info posted in the past few months to help you make an informed decision on getting a set of DB's in a rimmed cartridge of your choice. The only problem now is for you to figure which maker's gun catches your eye and exactly what floats your boat. You'll know when you handle that particular one or two. It's like falling in love all over again and again.

Hey Richie Cunningham's dad, why not? You usually have something to say about everything else.
