CZ 550 Extractors???
      #110296 - 24/07/08 01:16 AM

I just got off the phone with Mike at CZ. I called to ask if factory stock, unmodified CZ 550 extractors are designed to snap over the rim of a round dropped into the chamber by hand. He told me that, just like an unmodified M98 Mauser, they are NOT designed to do so.

The extractor on my 550 will NOT snap over the rim of a so-chambered round. Others have reported that theirs do snap over.

Regarding factory stock, unmodified extractors, will yours snap over a round dropped into the chamber by hand?

I had a CZ550 American Safari in .458 lott for a time, and it would NOT load a round dropped into the barrel. It had to pick it up off the magazine. I no longer have it, so I am unsure as to how one can rectify this. I have a Ruger M77 Magnum in the lott and it loads rounds dropped into the chamber easily. I have several other mauser based rifles that do as well. It shouldnt be difficult to fix. You might try New England Custom Guns for more information. They should be able to help.

My brand new CZ 550 FS in 6.5x55 mm snaps over cartridges fed singly into the chamber just fine. I'll stop doing it though, as I don't want to risk breaking the extractor. Take care, Tom

My .308 CZ550 American snaps over single rounds fed into the chamber. No worries.

In regard to feeding from the magazine, it only grabs the round completely once it is out of the removeable magazine and almost in the chamber, unlike a mauser that grabs the round as it pops up out of the magazine. My CZ550 is more controlled extraction than controlled feed.

I had one of mine Modified so it would snap over a chambered round.

All my Mauser 98's have also been so modified.

Just get a gunsmith to do it correctly and they work a charm.
Fuck it up and it's a pain in the arse !!!

500, was there a need to grind any relief inside the receiver to allow the extractor to spring out? Isn't that required when 98's are so modified?

I wouldn't have a clue.

I'm no good at that type of thing so leave it to those who
know / gunsmith's to do it.

I just tell them what I want.

I just put pressure on the extractor as I shut the bolt and this lets the extractor ride over the cartridge rim.

Eureka!!

Thanks, RLI. I just tried it.

Works like a charm!!

I've been thinking back to all the articles I've read about converting Mauser extractors to override cartridge rims (many years ago). I don't remember any details, but what I do remember is people saying an unmodified Mauser simply would not snap over a rim, no way. This makes me think that the fellow at CZ who said Model 550 extractors are not so modified may have been mistaken. Also, I've examined mine, and the outer edge is ground to a bevel; it is not square. Why would they do that if not for this purpose?

Take care, Tom

Tom, I think the bevel is designed to fit the extraction groove, not necessarily to provide a cam to snap over.

I believe you are correct about the "no way" part of some 98's not snapping over at all tho, as I think the extractor as mentioned above can't move out enough to snap over in some unmodified 98's.

Putting pressure on my 550 as per RLI's suggestion causes the extractor to easily snap over the rim. On my FN98 it takes quite a bit of hard pressure, and my M46/96 Swede snaps over by itself.
