A few years ago, when Sharp was younger, we set up a Courteney photoshoot at Ncema outside Esigodini, one hour's drive south of Bulawayo. Before we could even begin we had to cut a road through the bush. We wanted to simulate a ferry crossing, and we had it all planned. Until disaster struck. The pont tipped, Sharp's brand new Toyota Land Cruiser sank to the bottom, and the music still playing on the submerged sound system rose to the surface in giant bubbles to laugh at us.
Note: The Toyota was fully operational in 24 hours.

John,we had a similar experiance.This was about 10 years back,we were on a ibex hunt and crossing the Hingol river in Balochistan.When we entered the water it was hardly 12 inches deep but as we progressed it started to rise all of a sudden and when we were half way down it was over the hood of our Landcruiser.We quickly grabbed our guns and gear and got out,the vehicle was slowly being swept away,such was the force of the water.Luckily a truck belonging to an oil exploration co. was passing by and it had a winch and steel cable and thus our vehicle was pulled out in time.Our driver being a mechanic had the vehicle rolling within a few hours.

I think I see the problem. The tarp goes UNDER the car if you want it to float. In the military years ago we used the method of driving a Land Rover onto a tarp, wraping it up, and floating the bundle across deep rivers etc. Being a fair shot I sometimes had the job of sitting on top with a loaded SLR (FN-FAL) and watching for crocks and sharks. Other diggers had to wade out with tarp to mid chest deep while vehicle was driven in. I found that any sudden increase in my apparent interest, such as raising a little and half lifting the rifle would induce extreeme nervousnouis in those who were wet. God will probably punish me for that one day.

I had a similar experience to Iqbal a few years ago in Malawi. My wife and I were driving our Land Rover down a dirt track when we came upon a span of track that was flooded. There were some small kids midway out standing in water to their knees, so we figured it wasn't very deep. As I drove into the water we suddenly plunged down to the hood half way towards the kids! It turned out that they were standing on a rise in the track...
Having estimated that it was much more shallow than it turned out to be, I was driving with too much speed to create a perfect bow wave in front of the radiator (which is important when wading with vehicles in deep water). Thus the wave not only splashed up the hood, but in fact splashed all the way up the front windshield up to the roof!  
This lasted luckily only a couple of seconds before the Defender was on a more shallow part of the flooded track.
Just by chance the side windows were up at the time, or else we would have filled the car with water. 
On the bright side, the car, and especially my windshield was cleaner than it had been in months.
