The sensitive case of lion hunting in Namibia
      #109855 - 16/07/08 06:16 PM

Although I have absolutely no disire the hunt a lion ever in my life, I understand and respect the wish of other hunters to do just that. However, in a remote arid part of Namibia, there is a passionate man spending his life researching the extraordinary life of our country's so-called desert lions. Now, nobody that has not been to this part of the world must even try to comment. This is sacred ground to anybody with a grain of humility and a sense of respect under his nails.

I do not feel like relating the whole issue here, I am just to sad because in a way I am involved with the brave efforts of Dr. Flip (as we all know him) Please take the time and browse through his webpage up till where is ends with the demise of lioness Xpl-17 . . .

On this side of the Atlantic the same problem occurs with jaguars. 5 jaguars that received a collar in Iguacu national park were killed within about a year, after they started to prey on domestic stock.

To a rancher who has 1000 cows a jaguar can eat 25% of his net income! Not even some of the most dedicated researchers would give 25% of their net income to conservation. Thus, the problem has to be solved in another way and it will cost society a lot more if these animals are to roam free over large areas.

Uninateraly deciding (through prohibitions) to send the bill to the rancher is a foolproof way of exterminanting these big cats.

Sorry to hear of your lions' situation. Trying to eke out a living in the desert must be hard for them. On the other hand, as hunters many of us would be interested in the permits to take cattle-eating individuals. The best compromise I believe is to make sure the permit money is a significant amount and shared with the local people who have to put up with the lions' predations. In this way, the locals may come to value the lions as a wildlife resource, not just see them as pests that eat their livelihoods.
