Cape gun Project.
      #109575 - 12/07/08 12:19 PM

I have a new project and I want to get some advise.
I’m thinking about making a cape gun, one smooth barrel and one rifled barrels.

It will be a “working gun” so no fancy engraving just a tough shotgun with a rifle barrel sleeved.
I would like a medium range rifle cartridge so no .45-70.
I would like it in .30-40 Krag or .303 Brit. as I can get both .308 and .311 rifled barrels but I do not know any reamer in Argentina for any of them.
I think I can find some used barrels from customized military rifles in .303 Brit or in 8x57mm. The later (I think) can be used to make a 8x57mmR.

Now my questions which cartridge to choose?
Which shotgun? 20, 16 or 12 GA?
Also, any advise on sleeving?

Thanks
Martin

PD: Correct cape gun have the left barrel rifled.

Hi a 20/8x57jrs would make a fine combo and i would turn down the old 8mm barrel to fit inside the 20g barrel. In europe the 8x57jrs is getting more and more common in doubles and combos as the hogs are spreading, so there should be a steady supply of brass and factory ammo.

If one would ream out the choke on the shotgun barrel and also the forcingcone, and get a shop to turn the rifled barrel to fit inside the shotgun barrel with the rim and all, it would be possible to glue it in place.

The first double rifle that I built for myself has two rifled Hastings barrels sleeved into the monoblock which I created from the original shotgun barrel assembly. I absolutely love it and have killed about a dozen deer with it. However, there have been many occasions when hunting in thick brush when I have wished that I had built a Cape gun instead. An ounce and a half of OO buck in a smooth right barrel, and a Lightfield slug in a rifled left barrel would be the best of all possible worlds for the majority of whitetaiol hunting in my area. It would also have made several months of regulating the rifled barrels totally unnecessary!

Martin,
I really like your idea about building a capegun, as a matter of fact, I have considered doing one for a long time. This is just my personal preferrence, but in answer to your question about what gauge to use, I would go with the 20 gauge. I think it is large enough to bring down most of the game that you would encounter while hunting with a cape gun and I also feel that it would look better next to the smaller rifle caliber barrles that you mentioned. I feel that the closer they are to the same diameter, the more pleasing they look. I realise that this is purely cosmetic, but I do find that I somehow shoot better with a gun that looks good. As far as the rifle caliber goes, they are all good choices, I would go with the one that is the easiest to find ammo for in your area. And, if you decide to use a salvaged military barrel, be sure it is in perfect condition inside. Many aren't, and building one of these guns is a lot of work, you should not use less than perfect barrels to do one. Good luck with your project. Bob H.

Martin,
One more thought, then I'll shut up. Don't even think about putting the rifle barrel inside one of the shotgun barrels, it will be heavy and hard to swing. Cut one side off in front of the chamber, (the left is traditional if that matters to you), and solder in a sleever barrel that you have contured down to an acceptable weight and length. You will be much happier with the results. Bob H.

In German and Austrian cape guns ("Büchsflinte"), the right barrel always is the rifle barrel, using the front trigger which is usually a set trigger.

Thank for the answers.
Birdhunter50,
I know that it would be a heavy but I know only one gunsmith that can do it and it is far away.
The sleeving, if the barrel is thin, should not increase the weight too much.(I hope)
fuhrmann,
I know it thats why I call it "cape gun" most British combinations were made this way.

I have not find the barrel yet.
If I can not get one on those I should have to use a .45-70 but I much preffer a smaller cartridge.
I will let you know how it ends.
Thanks
MArtin
