Question.
      #109489 - 11/07/08 03:02 PM

Hello friends, again going to bother you, I have a curiosity and I've read is that the caliber Winchester Magnum 338 is quite acceptable to hunt a lion. My doubt is, that tip is recommended to lower a lion. As I say, forgive for any inconvenience.

Regards,

Oscar.

The minimum legal caliber in most countries is the .375 H&H, or in some cases, the 9.3x62 mm. I got mine with a .338. It worked. I had a .458 with me but I decided on the .338 because I thought if the range got beyond 100 meters the .338 would be better. It turned out to be a 28 yard shot.

338 would work well on Lion and Leopard but is often not legal for Buffalo, so if you want to stay on the right side of the law when shooting Buffalo for bait you might need a 9.3, 375 or 416.
I used a 9.3x62.

Well, I am going to Zimbabwe in september to hunt buffalo rather than lion. However, due to the chance of bumping one of the big, nasty, or carnivorous animals in the region I have opted to take a .375 ruger as my light rifle and .458 lott as my primary buff rifle. I based my decision on advice from guys in this forum that have extensive experience in dangerous game hunting. I have always sunscribed to the "use enough gun" parable. I will say that I have had to do alot of reloading and practicing to get to the point where I am confident I can deliver the shot where I want it to go. The .338 winchester was one of the choices, and mine shoots very well. I just think the .375 will do everything the .338 will in this case, and can fill in in the unlikely event my .458 fails or breaks. By the same token I feel sure I can take all the species I want with the .458 as well. Whatever your choice I wish you luck and a great hunt.

Thank you all for your responses. Certainly, I had not taken into account that the minimum size allowed in Africa was 375. I can not really go to Africa to hunt, hopefully, but asked out of curiosity, if ever I win the lottery jejeje.

I said thanks,

Oscar
