"Southern Riverina Fox Drive - Conservation Hunting"

by '458Double'

Some photos:

Last month we had a fox drive in the Southern Riverina, hell it was dry down there. We had 120 odd shooters participate in the drives over the weekend & ended up scoring abot 60 foxes & 6 or so hares & rabbits.

A great weekend was had by all.

The weekend ended well, with me shooting 7 feral peacocks & hens. Plucked them all, bagged them & brought home for the larder.

Foxes stink & are inedible, pea fowl, fantastic eating, especially stuffed & roasted.

Rob and I thought some of our members might get a "kick" out of the numbers of foxes taken during the drive.

The peacocks interest me just as much!

The southern Riverina is a great place to shoot in. Many hours spent there, around Hay, Balranald, Tooleybuc, Booligal. The Hay Plains are fascinating, crossing there the first time blew my mind, the 100th crossing still as breathtaking. Lots of emus, roos, pigs, rabbits, and birds for shotgunners.

An amazing number of foxes from the drive. It would be great to hear how the drive is actually done and the sort of the countryside.

The fox drive is done in stubble paddocks and any areas of bush, small enough that 5-10 people can walk across firing a few shots to scare the foxes out to the waiting shooters, on the up-wind side.
This year we got fewer foxes than usual possably because of the drought.

I have 2 videos of this fox drive on my U-Tube site.

Woodlea

Thanks for the reply.

Interesting, I wonder how fox drives would work here at home. Not in the Barossa itself, but across the ranges into the Murray 'flats'. My family used to own some scrubby slat bush country and I'm thinking drives for foxes and other vermin (game ) would probably work there too.

If you have 5-10 beaters, how many shooters do you need? How far apart are shooters situated?

I have done a lot of drives with 10 to 15 people. You can get away with 1 or 2 beaters if the block is small or you have dogs, especially fox hounds. A fox hound barking upwind will usually move all foxes winthin a km or more. All you then need is enough shooters to cover the escapes, if the foxes dont get through you have enough.

We had a lot of beaters because it was a club shoot and we had a lot of shooters. The shooters and the beaters rotate so everyone only has to walk (beat) once.

BTTT

A thread from 2008, showing how sporting hunters and firearm owners assist the rural landowners, farmers, and even National Parks in feral animal control.

Banning guns from all but farmers is so silly. Will the state governments PAY professional shooters to make up the deficit, if the silly Adelaide judges get their way?

On another subject.
Finally the Shooters & Fishers Party of NSW message seems to have gotten through.

NSW Government declares foxes as invasive as rabbits, feral pigs and wild dogs
NSW COUNTRY HOUR SALLY BRYANT
UPDATED FRI AT 3:44PM

The New South Wales Minister for Agriculture Katrina Hodgkinson has declared war on the fox in her state, saying it's more than time that foxes were considered as destructive as feral pigs, rabbits and wild dogs.

The Minister says by instituting a pest control order on foxes the Government will give additional strength to the work that Invasive Species Co-operative Research Centre staff are already doing.

Ms Hodgkinson says it's surprising that the pest control order has not been instituted in the past, and it's overdue.

"Placing a pest control order on foxes will bring their control into line with that of other threats to our environment and agricultural production, like feral pigs and feral dogs," she said.

"There will be serious penalties in place if people do not comply with the pest control orders. Penalties can be as much as $8,500."

Glen Saunders used to head up the management of invasive species with the Department of Primary Industries. He's played a role in managing the problem of the European red fox in Australia and he's recognised as being an authority on the issue.

He says the impact of foxes in Australia should not be underestimated. He says they continue to spread across the landscape.

"They're pretty much everywhere these days, across 97 per cent of NSW, and that includes the urban environment," he said.

"It's not just a question of them predating on native and on young farm animals, they present a grave risk in spreading disease.
