Pub patrons hunt pigs

THE Far North today has 165 fewer feral pigs destroying farms and rainforest.

A convoy of utes carting the carcasses pulled into the Peeramon Hotel yesterday for the weigh-in of the third annual pig hunt.

More than 130 people took part in the event but it was team Rat Attack that destroyed more than 1000kg of pigs to take out the aggregate award.

The biggest boar killed weighed in at 107kg, while the biggest sow was 71kg.

Kirsten Geraghty took out the Babe and Boar award for her 73kg kill, while Tate Coughlan, 3, was named the youngest hunter.

Organiser Alana Battle said the hunt aimed to raise money for the cyclone-damaged hotel and gave the hunters a chance to do their bit to help out the region’s farmers and natural environment.

Ms Battle said she hoped the hunt put a dent in the $1 billion damage bill caused by feral pigs.

"Some teams went across the Tablelands to the west and down the coast," Ms Battle said.

"And some teams didn’t come back with anything at all."

The event coincided with the pub’s 100th birthday celebration.

My comment on the online comments of the Cairns Post newspaper:

Good news story! Australian hunters doing their bit for the environment by removing a good number of feral pigs while having a great time in the outdoors hunting.

and

"how do you get a 3 year old hunter surely he didn't have a gun ?

Probably went along with Dad for some fun. An award for the young future pig hunter.

"What a great idea for the hotel to celebrate their anniversary!

Aussie hunters again doing their bit helping the environment while enjoying a positive experience in the outdoors hunting feral pests.

Good on them."

This news item was in our local paper about a week before my brother and I went barra fishing in the Gulf. On one lagoon near the coast there was a mob of about 50 pigs, we stopped about 80 meters from them and they didn't even bother to stop digging in the mud. This is besides the ones we saw on the way to the creek we fished at. Every waterhole is churned up from these animals. There's probably enough pigs out there to hold this type of culling exercise most weekends. Strangely there's no bounty on them.

How does a kiwi get to do some of this kind of hunting?

I've tried to post on two occasions asking for hunt swaps etc & no response!

I could bring my Webley with slugs & pretend that I am a Double Rifle toting "Brown Sahib" or a Bewana!
