Hi: What is your favorite combination gun? I have owned the Savage 24 but it was not very accurate. I now have a Brno 300 series and it is very accurate. So just curious as to what you guys use and how reliable and accurate they are. Regards dan

Bug-

My favorite combos have all been old german sxs rimfire cape guns. I've owned five or six of them, two of them hammerless snap action with cocking indicators, the others snap action with hammers.
I have kept one through it all, my favorite (actually the most plain-jane of them all) 22rifle next to 9mmShot

It's squirrel brain accurate and absolutely silent with CCI CB long ammunition - hammer strike and impact slap are louder than muzzle report. I use it more than any of my other guns and rifles maintaining the integrity of my 30-year roof job.
At close range the 9mm side is quite effective on pigeons-on-the-wing.

Great little combo gun.

I haven't got a combo, but I felt compelled to answer, anyway...

I'd opt for an o/u shotgun/rifle combination.
The shot barrel in 12/70, half choke (I don't see any use for magnums, and additionally the existing shotguns in the house are 70mm so there'd be no risk of accidentally feeding magnums into a non-magnum gun!).
The rifle barrel I'd like to see in 7mm, probably 7x57R, but even a 6,5mm would do, and nothing larger than 8mm.
The use would be to have a rifle when bird hunting: often there are doves on a field too far for the shotgun, and then the rifle barrel would step in. This problem I encounter every year when duck hunting, and me and my hunting buddy always also go looking for dove. You know: "Shall I take the shotgun or the rifle?" Not wanting to carry them both.
The other good uses would be on roe deer and whitetail deer. For the whitetail I'd load the shot barrel with a slug, but with roe shot could be used. Also this'd be a potent combination for wild boar! Unfortunately, in Finland no use of shogun even with slug is allowed on elk, so then the gun'd only be single-shot.

My father'd buy a drilling in 20 gauge/suitable rifle barrel, 6,5mm to 8mm.
What use? Well, it'd be nice to have... If you have such a gun, you never need to think what to take, you just grab that one drilling and a pre-loaded ammo belt!
The 20 gauge would make it fairly light and not too noisy, which would make it useful in areas where there are lots of summer houses and like.

Whyn't I have one, then?
Well, when bird hunting a double-barreled shotgun is more useful as the 2nd shot is often needed.
In the scenario of the dove the situation only comes up once a year for me so I can live with the irritation but it does not really justify the acquisition of a combo.
For all else of my hunting a rifle is frankly a better choice as the shot barrel really would not have any value-added for the hunt.
My brother, again, mostly hunts small game like birds, furred animals, rabbits and like, and for him I could certainly see the combo being very handy, indeed, with a small rifle barrel like a .223.

My favorite combo gun on a budget is the Valmet 412... If you have deep pockets, then there's all kinds of choises from old(er) guns to new...

The 412's are very accurate and reliable, and have been excelent hunting guns for me...

I think the best combo which ever has been made in Finland is old TIKKA m77. It's quite handy and very accurate. I do not like VALMET 412 att all.

Hi

My favorite combo is the Brno ZH 300.

Mine is built in 1961, 12ga under 7x57R rifled barrel, type ZH 304.

In Sweden we have a maximum limit off 6 guns for hunting (shotguns and rimfires included)so what can we do ???

The solution is sets off barrels, are not counted for, so i have five extra barrel sets for mine.
3 are regular hunting shotgun sets, type ZH 301, 12ga different choke. One is a ZH 303, Skeet barrels. And the last one is a combo set in 12ga and 5,6x52R (.22SavHP).But dis one is special...
I have sleeved a 9,3x74R rifled barrel from the German company Lothar Wahlter in the 12-gauge.
Making this set a thru "Bergstudzen" (mountain rifle).
I use four interchangeable scopes fore this versatile combination gun.

My plan is to make one off the shotgun barrel sets in to a double gun.
Caliber ? I have some ideas about a rimmed version off the 9,3X57 Mauser (9,3x57R)
The 9,3 Mauser have an excellent reputation in Scandinavian big game hunting.

I think VALMET 412 is too heavy. I use combo when hunting birds with barking dog so lightweight gun is comfortable when walking all the day. And in my experience TIKKA is often more accurate than VALMET. When using TIKKA 07 (or 08) you have to get used to cock the rifle pipe with hammer but it's not so difficult. In tecnical means, both have very good quality

It would be nice if the 412's were lighter, but the extra weight does mean extra strength. It probably doesn't matter in the smaller cartridges though. I've carried mine many a mile, hunting over my dog, but mostly hunting all over Alaska...



One thing about the 412's, they are VERY accurate, and from my experience, they will out shoot most other brands of conbo's... I even took the scope off and reinstalled it between shots when shooting this target.



The 412 scope system is VERY reliable, is made of steel, and should last a lifetime...

Lastly, i don't like hammer combo's at all... I much prefer a hammerless, with double triggers, so that i have an "instant" choise of bbls., no matter what bbl. set i have on my 412 action.

Here in Finland you can buy old 412 VALMET (the newer 512 and so on aren't in the same quality) quite easy but if you find good used TIKKA combo, you are a very lucky man !!. TIKKA m77 in good condition with scope and detachable mount costs easy apr. 1000€. VALMET in same costs 700-800€.

Of course, you can buy more pipes (double rifle or double shotgun) to VALMET but personally I think that 412 is too heavy for shotgun and the double rifle system is not the best one.

And you can buy extra shotgunpipes to TIKKA m77 too. But they are very seldom
