South Africa gun question
      #108405 - 28/06/08 09:00 PM

Hello Folks,

I'm considering a trip to South Africa, and was told that if I bring two rifles they may not be chambered for the same cartridge. Is it true? Why would they make such a law?

Take care, Tom

I have no idea why they would adopt such a law, but it is the law. You may not import more than one rifle of the same calibre stamp. However, you may bring in a 30:06, and, a .308, even though they are both .30 caliber. What matters is what's stamped on the barrel.

What about a 280 Ackley Imp?

What is the question you have concerning the 280 Ackley Imp?

This is related to the other thread on ammo. Can one take a 280 Ackly Imp rifle with ammo into SAfrica? Will they let me bring in a rifle that is marked 280 Ack imp with ammo that is head stamped 280 Rem?

I would if I was concerned print out stickers for the ammo boxes with .280 Ackley Improved on the stickers etc.

This is an occasional problem in a lot of countries which are touchy with firearms or when encountering an 'enthusiastic' officer at an airport/border with custom and wildcat calibres. Just one issue you may have to cope with if choosing to use a wildcat or custom cartridge.

If it was me I would just do the sticker thing, have some photocopied pages on hand for reference, and just bluff it through.

Thanks for the clarification. As NitroX stated, it could be an issue depending on who you run into at customs. That's why when I had my 375 H&H rehambered to the 375 Ackley Improved, I never had the barrel restamped to indicate the change. I left it stamped as 375 H&H, and all my ammo for the Ackley also has the 375 H&H headstamp.

One item I have found to help quite a bit as well, is hiring one of the businesses that specialize in getting clients through with the large paper documents required for S Africa...Last time I stayed there used one..blew right through while others took 2 to 3 times as long--visited with a fellow who hunted there this year and used one as well--he was very happy with the results..would probably help in regards to the rifle/ammo issue..

For sure use an expediter. It will save you hours at the SA police station at the airport. My last trip in April '08 took less than 5 minutes to get through the gun business. Google Air 2000. Cost about $175 - money well spent. BTW, I packed my ammo in my rifle case. Went from Reno to Jo'burg to Maun, Botswana with zero problems. Remember to keep your permit paperwork with you at all times. I saw a bunch of Spanish hunters in Maun going through customs with their ammo in steel boxes with nothing written on the box. Dunno ... would use boxes properly marked.

Saw some gynormous buffalo. I only got a little one - 40 inches with a .458 Lott. He did the two-step and was down and out.
