Possible buff hunt
      #107410 - 14/06/08 10:04 PM

Hi guys my brother and I may soon be able to have a hunt for a buff, and seeing as I have no experience with them I thought I'd ask some questions here, so if they are silly please bear with me as stated I have yet to even see a buff in the wild.

I have a .416 Rigby which I plan on using, however I am not sure which bullets to load. Would I be better off loading both soft nose and solid bullets? What weight should I be using, I was thinking the standard 400/410 woodlieghs or are the woodleigh 450's the go? I have loaded my rifle upto 2700 fps with a 410 grain bullet, so is it wise to back down a bit and use a woodleigh or stay with the 2650-2700 fps and maybe use the barnes TSX or other monometal bullet for more energy?

My brother may also want to join in, and he dosnt have a heavy rifle, so I am wondering which would be best out of my .340 weatherby magnum or my ruger No 1 .577 NE 3" set up to fire 650 grain bullets? My weatherby is able to shoot 300 grain bullets at 2600 fps and has the advantage of three in the mag plus one in the spout. My .577 is not yet finished and is only a single shot, but its obviously a far more powerful round even though its only ever gonna shoot 650's at about 1900-2000fps, but its still only a single shopt if somthing goes wrong.....? I dont really want to be shareing a rifle during the hunt and these are my only other options gun wise.

Thanks in advance for the help

Steve

G'day Steve,

I have no experience with the Rigby but I do with the 416 Rem. I'd be tempted to load that Rigby down to 2500fps with woodleigh 410 softs and solids and put a soft on top of a mag full of solids.

With the other rifle I would take the 577 for your brother then you'll be there to act as back-up if things go apeshit !!

Cheers,
Mark.

Hey mark thanks for the advice I was leaning towards taking the .577 just wasnt sure about how a single shot would go on buff, but you are right in that the Rigby will have a full mag if need be.

Thanks for the help

Steve

I would recommend Woodleigh 410gr softs for buff. I've shot a couple or three over the years and I'm yet to fire a solid at a buff. A Woodleigh bonded-core soft will do everything a lesser-brand solid will do IMHO.

Like Mark I would also suggest your brother use the .577 with you as back-up with the Rigby if the quarry needs subsequent shots and he isn't quick enough. The relatively new Woodleigh 650gr .577s designed for the .577-90-650 nitro cartridge would be an absolute gem, in either steel-jacketed solid or soft-nose. As you probably gather, I would strongly recommend the latter!

With either of these cartridges and Woodleigh softs, just aim for the point of the shoulder. Game over!

Could you guys please help me with info on Buffalo hunting. Is it possible to hunt buffalo without doing an expensive guided hunt? I would like to hunt pigs & buffalo in Australia for a week. I am happy to reciprocate an exchange hunt for Sika deer or Tahr.

Any help would be appreciated.

Happy hunting.

Hi Marrakai, thanks again for the info. Strange that you have never seen the need for solids on water buff, is there a reason for this? Some say that these buff are as tough as a cape buff and I always read that it was 1 soft and a mag of solids for them, not trying to be smarta$$ just looking to learn some more about them, and the reason for not using solids.

Thanks again
Steve

I've only shot one buff so far and must confess that I "only" had woodleigh softs loaded.

Cheers,
Mark.

With the 416 I would slow the velocity down to around 2300fps which is plenty for bullet performance and less of a kick.
All softs would be fine in my opinion, but for the cost of a packet of solids I would fill the Mag with solids and have a soft in the chamber.

Thanks guys plenty of idears here, so the Rigby should be able to do the job with no fuss and having a single shot wont be a problem from the sounds of things.
Cheers
Steve

The hype might be a little more strong across the ocean ...

The PHs I hunted with didn't see the need for solids in Africa either. More important to put the SPs in the right place thw first time.
